digital photographer

The latest offering in Canon's prosumer PowerShot G series is the new G1 X. Announced today---the first official day of CES---the G1 X features a 1.5-inch 14.3-megapixel CMOS sensor (compared to the G12's 1/1.7-inch 10MP CCD sensor) as well as Canon's DIGIC 5 image processor. It also boasts an ISO range of up to 12800 for low-light capture and an f/2.8-f/16 4x optical zoom lens. With a price tag of $800, the G1 X costs as much, if not more, than an entry-level Canon DSLR, which might turn off those photographers who are shopping around for a next level camera to step up their image quality and feature set from a compact point-and-shoot, especially if they're looking to get into a system with interchangeable lenses. However, the Canon G series has for more than a decade now been a favorite everywhere camera for professional and enthusiast shutterbugs when they need to reach for a more portable option that will still make great images.

The Canon G1 X will be available for $799.99 in February.

Panasonic Reveals Lumix 3D1 Twin-Lens 3D Digital Camera

digital photographer

During the IFA show in Berlin in August, we reported that Panasonic had developed a twin-lens 3D digital camera. And now they've announced its concrete existence. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-3D1 features two newly developed 25mm wide angle 4x optical zoom lenses with "folded optics design," which have the capability of capturing 8-megapixel 3D still images and 1920x1080 3D HD video. "Additionally, the two-lens design allows users to record photo or video in different angles of view simultaneously," according to the manufacturer. The 3D1 also gives you the option to shoot 12MP 2D still images and 2D full HD video.

The Lumix 3D1 will be available for a suggested price of $499 in December. More from Panasonic below.

From Panasonic:

SECAUCUS, NJ (November 7, 2011) –Panasonic today announced the LUMIX DMC-3D1, a cutting-edge digital camera that employs two newly-developed lens units with folded optics design in a stunningly compact body that can capture crisp and clear 3D and 2D photos and videos.  The LUMIX 3D1, with a twin-lens design, features 25mm ultra-wide angle lenses with 4x optical zoom that offer the outstanding capability to record high resolution 8-megapixel 3D photo and 1920x1080 60i high quality 3D HD video using side-by-side method.  The LUMIX 3D1’s optics give users a wider range of composition possibilities with approximately 169% larger viewing space compared to that of 35mm cameras.

Featuring a unique shooting option, the new twin-lens system allows the LUMIX 3D1 to capture 2D images and video simultaneously. The LUMIX 3D1 can shoot 12-megapixel 2D photos and record 1920x1080i full HD 2D videos.  In conventional standard digital compact cameras, users must shoot in either photo or video mode and when photo mode is selected, video recording is interrupted.  The twin-lens design of the LUMIX 3D1 breaks through these conventional barriers with two separate mechanisms for image capturing, allowing for dual shooting capabilities.  Additionally, the two-lens design allows users to record photo or video in different angles of view simultaneously.  For example, users can record an entire party scene with one lens while zooming in on and capturing the photo of a specific person with another lens. Users can easily switch between 2D and 3D mode with the dedicated 2D/3D switch conveniently located on the back of the camera.

“Panasonic continues to lead the industry in 3D entertainment, giving consumers the opportunity to create their own content and then view it within their homes, and the new LUMIX 3D1 is an innovative digital camera that excels with its 3D imaging technologies, but also offers outstanding 2D photo capture options,” said Darin Pepple, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. “With its twin-lens design, the LUMIX 3D1 can even shoot HD video through one lens and 2D photos from the other – thus getting still and moving content simultaneously, a unique shooting feature which Panasonic provides so users can stretch their creativity.”

The 12-megapixel High Sensitivity MOS sensor and the Venus Engine allow the LUMIX 3D1 to achieve high-quality images and easily process image sensitivity and speed. Multi-process Noise Reduction applies optimal noise reduction according to the brightness of different areas of an image, thus creating crisp and beautiful photos and videos. Both high frequency noise that occurs in the dark area, and low frequency noise in the light are of a photo are suppressed even though occurring simultaneously in a photo. As a result, images recorded in low-light situations are dramatically clear, even when recorded at a high ISO setting.

The LUMIX 3D1 boasts extremely fast consecutive shots at 8 fps (without auto focusing) and 4 fps (with auto focusing) in full resolution.  Utilizing quad-CPUs the Venus Engine processes large amounts of 1920x1080i Full-HD data at high speeds in either AVCHD or MP4 formats.  Although using two sets of lens units and sensors, energy consumption of Venus Engine stays minimized to maintain the camera’s battery life for as long as that of a single lens compact digital camera.

Though the LUMIX 3D1 utilizes advanced functions to shoot exciting 3D and 2D content, it is easy enough for anyone to shoot beautiful 2D photo and videos using iA (Intelligent Auto) mode.  iA mode combines a suite of functions to help users achieve the perfect shots, including: MEGA O.I.S, AF Tracking, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Recognition and Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Exposure and Intelligent Handheld Nightshot, which generates beautiful night scenery with illumination by layering multiple images shot consecutively, allowing bright, glamorous night scenery to be recorded without using a tripod. The LUMIX 3D1 features a large 3.5-inch Smart Touch screen on the camera’s back which allows users to easily move through camera functions and recorded photos and videos.

The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-3D1 will be available in December 2011 for a suggested retail price of $499.99. For more information, please visit www.panasonic.com/lumix.

Last week we reported on Canon's three new PowerShot digital cameras. DP reporter Lynne Eodice was able to get a hands-on look at the new models on the show floor at IFA Berlin.

From Lynne:

Canon PowerShot SX150 IS

Offered in either black or red casing, Canon’s PowerShot SX150 IS (pictured at top) features a 14.1-megapixel image sensor, a 12x optical zoom 28mm wide-angle lens, and 720p video recording. Like all three of the new PowerShot cameras, the SX150 features Canon’s new Intelligent Image Stabilizing (IS) system to help ensure image sharpness. In addition to its variety of basic shooting modes, the SX150 gives you the opportunity to shoot manually, including Aperture or Shutter Priority modes for more artistic control over your images. Its 3-inch LCD screen allows for easy image viewing or scrolling through menus.

Canon ELPH 510 HS and ELPH 310

The tiny 12.1MP ELPH 510 HS offers a 12x optical zoom, and 28mm wide-angle lens and 1080p full High Definition video recording. It also has a 3.2-inch wide, touch-panel LCD screen. Both ELPH models utilize Canon’s HS system that combines a high-sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 Image Processor to help you to get sharp, well-exposed images in low-light situations. What’s especially impressive about the ELPH 510 is its unique Touch Shutter feature, which allows you to touch the screen where you want to focus and release your finger to shoot a photo. It will be available in red, black and silver.

By comparison, the ELPH 310 offers nearly the same specs: a 12.1MP CMOS sensor with an 8x optical zoom and 28mm wide-angle lens, as well as 1080p full HD video recording. It also features a High-Speed Burst mode, Smart Auto, and a 3-inch LCD screen. It will be available in five bright colors: purple, blue, pink, green and silver. Both ELPH models are scheduled to be available at the beginning of October 2011.

A Closer Look at the Panasonic Twin-Lens LUMIX 3D Camera

digital photographer

image © Lynne Eodice for Digital Photographer

Last week we reported on Panasonic's new LUMIX twin-lens 3D camera. Though it is still in the developmental stage at this time and isn't slated for availability until winter 2011, Panasonic did have a model on the show floor at IFA Berlin, and DP reporter Lynne Eodice was able to get a close-up look at the LUMIX 3D.

From Lynne:

Though the model was behind glass on the show floor, I was able to glimpse at how stylish it is, with a brushed metal strip on the case and a slim profile. This compact model will enable you to shoot 3D still photos as well as 3D High Definition videos. The camera has two newly developed 4x zoom lenses, which will allow you to shoot in either 2D and 3D formats. The 3D HD videos will be recorded in the AVCHD format using the side-by-side method. After shooting 3D photos and videos, you’ll have the opportunity to view them on a VIERA 3D TV either by inserting the SD card into the TV’s SD card slot or by connecting the camera to the TV with an HDMI cable.

This promises to be an exciting 3D camera to use once it’s on the market, and I can't wait to get my hands on a model when they're released in the coming months.

Hands-on with Samsung NX200, MV800, and WB750 Cameras

Lynne Eodice

Hands-on with Samsung NX200, MV800, and WB750 Cameras Text and Images by Lynne Eodice

Last week we reported on the newly announced Samsung NX200 mirrorless interchangeable lens compact camera. I was able to get a hands-on look at the camera on the show floor at IFA Berlin, as well as take it for a test spin around the historic German city. I also got to check out the other brand new Samsung cameras: the multiview MV800 with a Flip-Out touch screen LCD display, and the WB750 ultra compact camera with the longest zoom lens that Samsung offers.

Samsung NX200

Samsung NX200 test shots, click to enlarge

Samsung’s brand new NX200 (pictured at top) boasts a 20.3-megapixel sensor, and in the vein of EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder, Interchangeable Lens) cameras, blends high quality with a compact size. This makes it an ideal choice for the pro-level photographer who would prefer not to lug around a heavy camera and equipment while traveling, or for a photo enthusiast looking to step up from a point-and-shoot while avoiding the bulk of a DSLR. It offers a choice of several different interchangeable lenses, and offers High Definition movie recording among its array of features. I had a wonderful opportunity to test the NX200 with Samsung’s 18-200mm lens in Berlin, Germany, and was immediately impressed with its light-gathering qualities in the early evening. I photographed iconic locations, such as a long portion of the Berlin wall that’s still standing (which has been painted by international artists in a mural project), Checkpoint Charlie, and the Brandenburg Gate. The NX200 also enables you to experiment with ten different Smart Filter effects, as well as “Magic Frame” technology, which as we've seen in other Samsung models allows you to imbue your images with 13 diffent stylized frames, from “magazine covers” to holiday themes.

Samsung MV800

hands-on with Samsung MV800, click to enlarge

Samsung’s compact MV800 gives you the chance to shoot great pictures from all angles. It offers a 3-inch  flip-out LCD touch screen that tilts up and down and allowed me to frame and view each shot no matter what the angle was. By positioning this screen in various ways, I was able to shoot over people’s heads easily in a crowd, and shoot from very low points of view without getting down on the ground. This tiny camera boasts a 16.1MP CCD image sensor for high picture quality, a 5x optical zoom, and a 26mm wide-angle Schneider-KREUZNACH lens. Other fun creative functions include a Magic Frame feature, which includes 12 background templates, a Funny Face feature that allows you to bend and stretch portraits to distort facial features, and a Picture-in-Picture function, which lets you insert one image into another.

Samsung WB750

The tiny WB750 boasts an 18x optical zoom lens with 24x Smart Zoom technology, which makes this longest zoom lens in Samsung’s camera offerings. It also features a 12.5MP CMOS sensor that is designed to reduce image noise and distortion in both still images and video. This was a fun camera to use because of its very long zoom lens, as well as its speed--- it can capture still images up to 10 fps in its high-speed continuous mode. Samsung offers its proprietary Dual Capture function in several camera models, including the WB750, which allows you to shoot 10MP images while simultaneously recording video in full 1080p HD quality. Other features include a built-in HDR feature for amazing color and vibrant images, as well as an Action Panorama mode. And finally, the WB750 offers a Creative Movie Maker mode, so that you can combine still photos and video, create special effects, and add music instantly, eliminating the need for video-editing software in post-production.

Sony has announced the Cyber-shot TX55 point-and-shoot with a 3.3-inch wide angle touchscreen, 16.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and "amazing 3D image" capture. The TX55 also features something that Sony is calling "By Pixel Super Resolution" technology, which "boosts the cameras’ [5x] zoom range to a virtual 10x without losing quality at the image sensor’s maximum resolution." The camera also comes packed with a "Picture Effect" mode, which sounds similar to the creative art filters we've seen in many other manufacturers' models, with options like: HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, Miniature, Toy Camera, Partial Color, Pop Color and Soft High-key. The Sony Cyber-shot TX55 will be available for an estimated $350.00 in September. See the press release from Sony below.

From Sony:

SAN DIEGO, July 25, 2011 – With an exceptionally slim and stylish design, Sony’s new DSC-TX55 Cyber-shot camera makes it easy to capture any moment with high-quality still photos, full high-definition video and amazing 3D images, providing consumers with the ultimate in creative control of their photos and videos. The DSC-TX55 camera features a range of innovative new technologies, including “By Pixel Super Resolution” technology, which boosts the cameras’ zoom range to a virtual 10x without losing quality at the image sensor’s maximum resolution (16.2 million pixels). The new model is also the first Cyber-shot camera to offer a “Picture Effect” mode, which expands a shooter’s artistic possibilities without the need for editing software. “Our new DSC-TX55 model redefines what a compact camera can do,” said Yosuke Tomoda, director of Sony Electronics’ Cyber-shot business. “In addition to the newly developed, ultra-thin chassis design, the camera features an incredible combination of features and performance, putting more creativity at users’ fingertips than ever before.” The TX55 boasts a 16.2 megapixel, highly sensitive Exmor R™ CMOS sensor that delivers incredible image detail and ultra-low picture noise in both still images and Full HD video – even in low light conditions.  Also the camera’s hi-speed auto focus can lock onto subject in as little as 0.1 seconds, letting users grab the most fleeting photo moments with ease.

16 Mega-pixel CMOS Sensor with Clear Image Zoom Just 12.2mm slim (measurement excludes lens cover), which is smaller than the thickness of a standard AA-size battery, the Cyber-shot TX55 is the world’s thinnest camera in its class (among cameras with an optical anti-shake function).  The new model captures Full HD AVCHD video clips as well as 16.2 megapixel still images through its innovative and exceptionally thin 5x optical folded zoom lens. It introduces brand-new ‘Clear Image Zoom’ that boosts magnification without lowering the pixel count in the final image. Exclusive to Sony, ‘By Pixel Super Resolution’ processing further extends the camera’s 5x optical zoom range, allowing full-resolution 16.2 megapixel images with a maximum 10x zoom. ‘By Pixel Super Resolution’ technology also significantly boosts still image quality during movie recording. At a touch of the shutter button, ‘Dual Rec’ grabs detail-packed 12 megapixel-level still photos without interrupting Full HD video shooting. Further, the camera’s back panel is dominated by a super-sized 3.3-inch (8.3cm) Xtra Fine™ OLED wide touch-screen, perfect for showing off photos and movie clips with incredible detail. Enhanced Creativity and Functionality The innovative Picture Effect mode broadens the range of artistic options with an exciting palette of in-camera image treatments.   Effects can be viewed on the camera screen, allowing users to see the result of a chosen effect instantly rather than during the post-shooting experience. The full list of seven Picture Effect options includes HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, Miniature, Toy Camera, Partial Color, Pop Color and Soft High-key. Newly enhanced with additional electronic image stabilization for vertical and horizontal handshake correction, SteadyShot® image stabilization with Active Mode compensates for handheld camera movements during Full HD video shooting. Users can enjoy crisp, blur-free movie clips at all zoom settings, even when holding the camera while walking.

Great Results Made Easy The new DSC-TX55 camera makes it simple for users to easily achieve DSLR-like picture quality. Superior Auto mode recognizes a wide range of shooting situations, adjusting exposure and other settings for high-quality images with low noise and high dynamic range. Intelligent Sweep Panorama mode also features HR (High Resolution) mode, letting users capture breath-taking up to 42.9 megapixel panoramas. Just sweep the camera, then enjoy the results on a connected HD TV, or zoom in using a PlayStation®3 system to reveal the finest details. 3D Still Image captures dramatic 3D photos without the need for a large, bulky stereoscopic lens. With a single shutter press, the camera takes two shots consecutively, using the first image to estimate depth information to create a dramatic three-dimensional still image. Other 3D shooting options include 3D Sweep Panorama mode and Sweep Multi Angle. Enabling its incredible slimness, the new TX55 camera includes a slot to accept Memory Stick Micro™ (Mark2) and microSD/SDHC flash memory cards. Sony offers a choice of ultra-compact, high quality media in capacities up to 16GB, with Memory Stick Micro™ being enhanced to achieve data transfer speed of up to 15MB/s (fastest among micro memory cards) by carrying the same high performance HX Engine controller used on Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo to fully support the new cameras’ features such as 3D and full HD video shooting. All cards come with free PC software (available via download), File Rescue for quick, easy recovery of deleted or damaged photos and files, and x-Pict Story™ for Memory card that simplifies creation of dazzling slideshows.

Pricing and Availability The new Sony Cyber-shot™ TX55 camera will be available for about $350 this September at Sony stores, www.sonystyle.com and other authorized retailers throughout the Sony Dealer Network. The range of Sony Memory Stick Micro™ and MicroSD/SDHC media cards are available now throughout the Sony dealer network and along with an expanded range of coordinating accessories – including the colorful new LCJ-THF camera cover, AC-UD10 AC adaptor and BC-TRN2 fast battery charger.

Samsung Looks into Depth of Field Fix for Compact Cameras

digital photographer

In a recent patent application [here, via Photography Bay], Samsung proposed "a method for performing out-focus of camera having a first lens and a second lens, comprising: photographing a first image with the first lens and photographing a second image with the second lens; extracting depth information of the photographed first image and second image; and performing out-focus on the first image or the second image using the extracted depth information" [via]. Basically, they're looking into a way to get the kind of shallow DOF results of the DSLR with a compact point-and-shoot. We recently saw that a different technology for the same result is in the works with the Lytro camera.

Samsung SH100 WiFi Compact Camera Review

digital photographer

Samsung SH100: Pocket Camera with Instant Image Sharing Text and Images by Allison Gibson

First revealed at CES this year, the Samsung SH100 ($199.99 MSRP) compact digital camera offers instant, wireless sharing of images---via email or upload to social networking and photo sharing sites---directly from the device. For a petite pocket camera, this gadget has a far reach. It features a 14-megapixel CCD image sensor, a 5x optical zoom 26mm f/3.3-5.9 Samsung lens, and 720p High Definition video recording (30fps).

Instant Sharing

The most notable feature of the Samsung SH100 is its ability to share and automatically backup captured images instantly and wirelessly, with easy menu options for single or bulk image sharing. By using the camera's built-in wireless, you can connect to your WiFi network, to other Samsung WiFi cameras, or to an Android-powered Galaxy S smartphone to share your images. The phone can also be used as a remote viewfinder, offering real time preview and control of the shutter release.

The options for sharing include: email, and upload to Facebook, Picasa, YouTube and Photobucket. You can also browse existing photo albums while logged into Facebook, but cannot view walls or post statuses (there's no qwerty keyboard on the camera).

When I recently met with members of the Samsung team, I nagged them about the fact that the SH100 wasn't Twitter compatible, given the massive global popularity of the social networking site. Twitter users regularly include images in their tweets and I saw this as a missed opportunity for Samsung. Another obvious missed opportunity for the photo sharing community is Flickr. The good news is, I was told that Twitter and others are being considered for the next generation of the camera, and that adding support for new services is easy now that the technology for sharing is already there there. The fact that the remote viewfinder feature only works with Samsung smartphones seems a little incestuous and excludes users of other smartphones, but I can understand the interest in keeping the technology within the brand.

Design & UI

click thumbnails to enlarge

With a 3-inch touchscreen LCD that operates in the familiar way of a smartphone, the menus are easy to navigate, if a smidge less graceful in the dragging department than the smartphone that I'm most familiar with---the iPhone 4. The only button on the back of the camera, to the right of the LCD, is a dedicated Home button, which brings you back to the main menu from wherever you happen to be. At the top of the camera, you have the power button, zoom toggle and playback button. Otherwise, everything else is in the digital menu, which certainly helped to keep the camera's slim profile in check. At 3.66"W x 2.12"H x .74"D, the SH100 is very compact, and also lightweight. Another way they keep the size of the body down is to use MicroSD for memory, rather than the more common SD/SDHC cards.

The thing about these tiny digicams, though, is that they are sometimes too small to stabilize, making them prone to blur from camera shake. And, unfortunately, the SH100 only features "Digital Image Stabilization," not OIS (optical image stabilization, which stabilizes before the image is converted digitally) to compensate for shakiness. However, one exterior aid is the thumb grip on the back of the camera, which allows the camera to sit more securely in-hand when recording. But even then, especially in low-light conditions, you will need to brace the left side of the camera and turn up the ISO sensitivity to combat blur. I think one way to combat this---externally--- in a future generation would be to raise the shutter release, rather than leave it in the recessed position it is in now. As it is now, it requires a lot of pressure to snap a shot, and any extra pressure is bound to cause camera shake.

Creative Touches

Magic Frame: Billboard 1 (click to view full-size image)

One of the many creative features of the SH100 is called Magic Frame Shot, which allows you to layer your photograph into a digital template of your liking, with real time preview of the effects as you shoot. The options include: Wall Art, Album, Ripple, Full Moon, Old Record, Magazine, Sunny Day, Classic TV, Yesterday, Holiday, and two Billboard choices. Options such as image quality, flash and self-timer may still be applied to this effect. As with a regular shot, a Magic Frame Shot can be instantly shared on Facebook or emailed once captured.

Photo Filters: Vignetting, Fish-eye, Miniature; Smart Auto mode (click images to enlarge)

Another built-in creative feature of the SH100 is Photo Filter, which includes a menu of distinct automatic art filters, such as: Miniature (similar to Tilt-Shift or Toy Camera options seen elsewhere), Vignetting (similar to a Pinhole camera effect), Soft Focus, Half Tone, Sketch, Fish-eye, Defog, Classic, Retro, Negative, and two Old Film options. I was pleased to find that the Fish-eye filter is one of the better digital replications of the fish-eye lens effect that I've seen to date, after having tested the effect in several other cameras' art filter lineups---including that of the PENTAX K-x and K-r DSLRs. I only wish the fish-eye images weren't framed with that black vignette, which sort of looks like an old television set.

Additional creative features include: Scene Modes, Vignetting, Beauty Shot, Movie Filter, Night Shot, Palette Effect and Object Highlight. There is also a built-in Photo Editor. The SH100's Smart Auto 2.0 for still images and video does the guesswork for you by choosing one of 17 different shooting modes.

Conclusion

While the Samsung SH100 isn't the first WiFi point-and-shoot, it does offer the most avenues for connecting. Hopefully soon this will be standard fair for pocket cams, with even more options, as instant sharing is the name of the game these days.

Leica Announces M9-P: World's Smallest Full-Frame Digital Camera

digital photographer

Leica has just announced the latest in their rangefinder lineup---the M9-P compact digital camera. In the manner of Leica's historically high-end finishes, the new M9-P "includes a scratch-resistant, sapphire crystal covering on the LCD screen. Produced using special diamond cutting tools, this screen is fashioned from one of the world’s hardest and most resilient materials. Extremely resistant to wear and almost unbreakable, the sapphire glass LCD cover offers many years of reliable use," according to the manufacturer. The M9-P also features an 18-megapixel 24 x 36mm (35mm format) CCD sensor and a Microprocessor-controlled, exceptionally low-noise, metal blade shutter with vertical movement. The M9-P will be available in black paint or traditional silver chrome finishes in July 2011. Read the full press release below.

From Leica:

Solms, Germany (June 21, 2011) - Leica Camera AG is proud to present a new version of the world’s smallest, full-frame digital system camera: the Leica M9-P.  This new model will sit alongside the Leica M9 in the company’s rangefinder portfolio. Providing an alternative, even more discreet and resilient design that further reinforces the classic nature of the M9, the M9-P specifically meets the needs of professional photographers.  The new model is now available in a classic silver chrome or subtle black paint finish.

Featuring the compact size, full-frame, 18 megapixel 24 x 36mm sensor (35mm format), sophisticated image processing and robust construction of the highly successful Leica M9, the M9-P also incorporates features designed for professional users or photographers who prefer a pure, even more unobtrusive styling.

The Leica M9-P includes a scratch-resistant, sapphire crystal covering on the LCD screen. Produced using special diamond cutting tools, this screen is fashioned from one of the world’s hardest and most resilient materials. Extremely resistant to wear and almost unbreakable, the sapphire glass LCD cover offers many years of reliable use. Additionally, the anti-reflective coating on both sides of the cover improves the review of images on the display after capture, particularly in unfavorable lighting conditions.

Finished in vulcanite leatherette, the external covering of the body of the M9-P is particularly resistant to wear. This leathering features a more coarsely-textured finish that ensures a steadier grip when shooting, making the M9-P feel particularly safe and secure in the hand.

Fulfilling the needs of many professional photographers to capture the decisive moment as discretely as possible, the Leica M9-P’s minimalist styling highlights its most essential features. The Leica red dot logo and the M9 lettering on the front have been omitted and replaced with the Leica name in classic script form engraved on the top plate, making the M9-P the quintessential unobtrusive tool.

Since 1954, the Leica M-System has represented an unmistakable, individual kind of photography and a very conscious photographic style and allowed photographers to capture, document and interpret life’s fleeting moments in all fields of photography, from photojournalism, reportage and ‘available light’ to the capture of portraits and aesthetic, fine-art images.  With a Leica M, the photographer becomes a ‘part of the action’ when capturing challenging, authentic and creative images. The frame lines frame precisely the shot the photographer envisages, while allowing a clear view of the scene outside the viewfinder frame.

The functions of the Leica M are consistently constructed for extreme durability and a long working life. The highest quality materials, intricate manufacturing processes and meticulous manual assembly at Leica Camera’s facility in Germany guarantee functional reliability for years to come.

The Leica M9-P will be available from Leica dealers in two different finishes, black paint or traditional silver chrome, beginning July 2011.

Sony Announces NEX-C3 Compact Interchangeable Lens Camera

digital photographer

Sony has just announced the NEX-C3 digital camera---the smallest and lightest interchangeable lens digital camera on the market, according to the manufacturer. Featuring a 16.2-megapixel EXMOR sensor (24mm APS-C size) and "press and rotate" operating with real time preview of different effects, the NEX-C3 comes on the heels of last year's ground-breaking NEX-5 and NEX-3, which were “the world’s first interchangeable lens cameras with an APS-C sensor to continuously adjust focus and exposure while recording video.” A new feature for this generation of the NEX lineup is called Picture Effects (essentially, art filters), which includes a Background Defocus effect to create the look of shallow depth of field in a photograph. A bonus to Sony's new Picture Effects is that multiple effects can be applied to one shot and previewed simultaneously.

The NEX-C3 will be available in August for $599.99 (16mm f/2.8 kit) and $649.99 (18-55mm kit). Ten new lenses will be available by 2012 in addition to the three existing E-Mount lenses that are now available, turning the system into a lasting investment for those photographers who find the NEX system preferable to the DSLR format. Olympus PEN E-PL2 Review

digital photographer

Olympus PEN E-PL2: Creative and Compact Interchangeable Lens Camera Text and Images by Allison Gibson

I first got a hands-on look at the Olympus PEN E-PL2 when it was announced at CES Las Vegas earlier this year. Even at first glance, I was impressed by the fourth generation compact, interchangeable lens PEN camera. The new exaggerated rubber hand grip and slightly smaller body (than that of its predecessor--the PEN E-PL1) make the camera more efficient, and updates like the new Live Guide feature for still and video preview, take this travel-friendly camera to a more professional level.

Operating on the Micro Four Thirds standard (read about mirrorless technology, and how it differs from single lens reflex, here), the PEN E-PL2 boasts a 12.3-megapixel Live MOS image sensor---the same size sensor as the one inside the Olympus E-30 and E-620 DSLRs. The most obvious advantage to the Micro Four Thirds camera is that it packs that large image sensor---with its enhanced low-light performance and image quality---into a more svelte and manageable body, while still allowing for interchangeable lenses.

Cosmetic and UI Upgrades

click thumbnails to enlarge

With the new E-PL2, Olympus has not only taken the body size down a fraction but also designed the camera to look less retro and more sleek, by omitting the metal piping on the body and streamlining the function buttons. The on/off button on top is now slightly recessed and a different shape than the larger, protruding shutter release so that there is never any doubt as to which function is being triggered. On the back, the four-way d-pad now sits inside a selection dial for much quicker selection of aperture, exposure, etc., and the menu button is set apart from other buttons, so that it can be quickly depressed for shooting options. The E-PL2 also features a wide 3-inch 460,000 dot LCD, as compared to the E-PL1's 2.7-inch, 230,000 dot monitor.

All of these upgrades add up to a more professional-feeling piece of equipment, while still remaining at a lower price than the camera at the top of the PEN lineup, the EP2. Apparently, however, it's my lot in life to bemoan the absence of viewfinders in the current mid-range digital camera market, so here I can't let the PEN E-PL2 (or the entire PEN lineup, for that matter) slide by unmentioned in this regard.  I know I am not alone in feeling more precise in my framing of a photograph when pressing my face to the viewfinder instead of holding it out, shakily, in front of me. I would take a slightly larger camera any time if it were included. The E-PL2 does include an accessory port, where you can attach a VF-2 detachable electronic viewfinder. The port can also be used to attach the PENPAL Bluetooth accessory for sharing images instantly, the MAL-1 accessory light, and the EMA-1 external mic adapter.

Functional Upgrades & Performance

Art Filters (clockwise from top left): Pop Art, Soft Focus, Grainy Film, Dramatic Tone, Diorama, Pin Hole click thumbnails to enlarge

This is a fun camera and a good image maker. The PEN E-PL2 features Olympus' long-admired Art Filter selection, which provides quick options for creative capture. The E-PL2 replaced its predecessor's Gentle Sepia Filter with the new Dramatic Tone selection---a filter that I found to produce exciting, almost HDR-like, tones. (See images above.) In addition to the Art Filters, the guts of the camera got some upgrades, including the new Truepic V Image Processor, which works with the image sensor to deliver high-quality, low-noise images, even in low-light, supporting ISOs up to 6400.

The compact ED 14-42mm f3.5/5.6 kit lens is "Movie & Still Compatible" (MSC), with an inner focus mechanism for speed and virtual silence during High Definition (720p/30fps) video capture. The E-PL2 also lets you toggle between still and video capture instantly, with the press of the red record button on the back of the camera, so that you record the scene in the best possible medium every time.

Conclusion

The E-PL2 is a smartly upgraded addition to the PEN series, and a good choice for the photographer who is looking for an advanced, interchangeable lens, image maker in a more compact size than even a lighter weight DSLR. The creative controls pair nicely with the low-light quality and advanced image processing to make this a fun and well-rounded piece of shooting equipment.

Hands-on with PENTAX Optio RS1500

digital photographer

PENTAX has just announced the Optio RS1500 second generation customizable pocket cam. The 14-megapixel RS1500 features a 3-inch LCD, a wide 4x optical zoom lens (27.5-110mm) and a thin, lightweight body. This cosmetically customizable digital camera features a removable PENTAX-original faceplate system, which allows you to match the camera to your unique personality. Choose from ten pre-designed skins, or "download the PENTAX PERSONAL SKIN DESIGNER Adobe Air-based software from www.pentaximaging.com and use the digital designer to import a photo or digital image and save a skin as a PDF for printing on a color printer."

When I got a sneak peek, hands-on look at the Optio RS1500 at CES earlier this year, I was impressed by the upgrades made to the interchangeable skin system. Rather than requiring a tool to switch out the faceplate, the new camera makes it as simple as possible to customize the camera. With the new screwless design, the skin is secured by the interchangeable lens ring snap (which comes in your choice of either orange or black), that easily pops on and off when you want to customize your digicam. This struck me as a great gift idea, especially given the camera's budget price for those specs. The PENTAX Optio RS1500 will be available in April for $149.95. See the full press release from PENTAX below.

PENTAX Announces Stylish New Optio S1

digital photographer

PENTAX has just announced the chic new Optio S1 digital camera. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at this stylish little number during CES in January, and was very impressed with not only its looks but its specs, as well as my test shots. The UI of the slim S1 was really intuitive, even with most of the controls are tucked inside the digital menu to eliminate clutter on the sleek camera. The S1 is PENTAX's first compact digicam to feature built-in High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode, and also boasts a nice, wide 5x optical zoom lens (28-140mm).

The PENTAX Optio S1 is available for pre-order now on the www.pentaxwebstore.com for $199.95. More information from PENTAX below.

Each model features a color coordinated lens barrel and translucent control buttons, as well as laser-engraved logos and feature descriptions on the front panel. The meticulous design detail of the Optio S1 makes it a digital camera that doubles as a fashion accessory.

Versatile 5X optical zoom lens with 28mm wide-angle coverage The ultra-compact Optio S1 features an 5X optical zoom lens covering focal lengths from 5mm to 25mm (equivalent in the 35mm format to approximately 28mm wide angle to 140mm telephoto) that may be used for a wide variety of subjects and scenes including landscapes, architecture, group portraits in confined spaces, and tightly cropped snapshots taken from a distance. An Intelligent Zoom function allows even tighter zooming in on the subject, extending the digital zoom range up to 33.5X with no loss of image fidelity.

Exceptional image quality With exceptional image resolution of 14 effective megapixels and an advanced imaging engine with a high-performance PENTAX zoom lens and a mechanical Shake Reduction (SR) system, the Optio S1 delivers brilliant, high-quality images with well-defined details even when enlarged to poster size. Triple Shake Reduction (SR) image stabilization technology to prevent image blur Sensor-shift SR: The Optio S1 offers and advanced sensor-shift SR mechanism for sharp, blur-free images even when shooting telephoto shots, sunsets or indoor scenes in incident light. The camera compensates for camera shake up to approximately three shutter steps. High-Sensitivity Digital SR*: The Optio S1 automatically raises the sensitivity as high as ISO 6400 for higher shutter speeds to minimize the adverse effects of camera shake and subject movement when shooting still images in low-light conditions. * When the High-Sensitivity anti-shake mode is selected, the recorded size is fixed to 5M (2592 x 1944 pixels). Movie SR*: During movie recording, the Optio S1 can prevent blurry images and annoying camera shake by using Movie Shake Reduction. * When the Movie SR mode is selected, the angle of view becomes narrower than normal shooting.

High-quality, widescreen HD movie recording with dedicated REC button The Optio S1 captures detailed movie clips at 16:9 high-definition TV resolution (1280 x 720 pixels)* at a frame rate of approximately 30 frames per second. A new, dedicated Movie REC button positioned on the back panel initiates movie recording from any shooting mode without delay. * When the Optio S1’s AV output terminal is used, movie clips are output at standard definition. If the user wishes to play back movie clips in high definition (1280 x 720 pixels), the data must be transferred to a personal computer for playback.

Advanced, user-friendly Auto Picture mode for hands-off selection of the best shooting mode The Optio S1 features the PENTAX-original Auto Picture mode that automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode for a given subject or scene by accurately and instantly accessing all photographic conditions affecting the subject or scene. This set-it-and-forget-it mode detects 14 different subjects and scene types including people, landscape, blue sky, sunset, and more. The mode instantly optimizes all camera settings such as sensitivity and shutter speed for the quality images for the type of subject and scene identified.

Upgraded face detection for greater convenience A new-generation Face Detection AF & AE function instantly and accurately detects the subject’s face in the image field and a Natural Skin mode reproduces natural, healthy skin texture.

Creative digital filters and tools The Optio S1 offers nine digital filters, including Toy Camera and Retro, to add various creative visual effects to recorded images without a computer. A new Miniature filter converts any scene into an image full of miniatures, and an HDR filter (first ever on a PENTAX compact) produces images with outstanding exposure detail in wide exposure situations.

Nikon Announces the 36X Superzoom COOLPIX P500

digital photographer

Nikon has just announced the 36x zoom COOLPIX P500, featuring the longest zoom ever integrated into a COOLPIX camera. The new super-zoom compact is an upgrade to the 26x COOLPIX P100, which we reviewed last year and called "an ideal travel camera." This new generation obviously breaks the zoom barrier with its wide-angle (22.5mm-810mm) optical Zoom NIKKOR ED glass lens, but also boasts Nikon's EXPEED C2 dual image processor for enhanced performance and noise reduction, as well as a new shooting mode button that "facilitates quick setting of continuous frame shooting, in addition to the pre shooting cache that starts to snap photos before the button is fully depressed." I got to handle this camera behind the scenes at CES last month and was excited by the new features, such as full HD (1080p) video capability and the Easy Panorama mode. The P500 will be available for $399.95 in March. See the full press release for the COOLPIX P500, as well as two other superzoom camera announcements, below.

From Nikon:

MELVILLE, NY (Feb 8, 2011) – Invoking the NIKKOR legacy of unparalleled optics innovation, Nikon Inc. today unveiled three new high power superzoom COOLPIX digital cameras, including the new COOLPIX P500 with a 36x zoom, the longest zoom ever integrated into a COOLPIX camera. For consumers who desire slim zoom or affordable telephoto, Nikon has also announced the new COOLPIX S9100 and L120 cameras to address the need for versatile, high performance compact cameras with easy-to-use functionality.

Whether capturing photos or HD video up close or from afar, Nikon’s new super-zoom COOLPIX cameras are ideal for cramped quarters or the great outdoors. The new COOLPIX P500 is a full-featured compact camera complete with an expansive 36x zoom for photo enthusiasts looking for their next big adventure, while the new COOLPIX S9100 packs an 18x zoom in a sleek body ideal for traveling light. Rounding out this impressive lineup, the new COOLPIX L120 combines a powerful 21x zoom with easy-to-use features for the ultimate family camera.

“Today’s consumers want an increase in zoom range, and a camera that is compact enough to never hinder a jet-set, on-the-go lifestyle.  Nikon listened, and offers the best of both worlds with these three new COOLPIX models,” said Bo Kajiwara, director of marketing, Nikon Inc.  “These three new COOLPIX models offer the shooting versatility that comes from the stellar NIKKOR lenses while still offering the portability of compact digital cameras.”

COOLPIX Technology At the core of these new COOLPIX cameras are Nikon’s world-class NIKKOR lenses, delivering accurate detail, brilliant color and amazing clarity. Further enhancing color and sharpness, Nikon’s EXPEED C2™ high performance digital image processing engine is implemented and custom-optimized for each COOLPIX model to ensure high-quality pictures.  With a variety of useful functions such as the Scene Auto Selector, Best Shot Selector and Smart Portrait System, the COOLPIX lineup is designed to help even the most inexperienced photographer take beautiful photos easily.

The New COOLPIX P500: Beyond Super-Telephoto The COOLPIX P500 features a 36x wide-angle optical Zoom NIKKOR ED glass lens, shattering the conventional zoom barrier to create the “ultra-telephoto” premium compact.  From shooting super wide-angle 22.5mm to a staggering 810mm (35mm equivalent), the COOLPIX P500 is the best bet to capture the user’s intent with exceptional image quality, even in challenging low-light conditions thanks to the 12.1-megapixel backside illumination CMOS sensor.

A first for the COOLPIX line of digital cameras, the P500 features the EXPEED C2 dual image processor that greatly enhances performance, reduces noise and corrects distortion in both movies and still images. With a 36x zoom, the need for an exceptional image stabilization system is essential for capturing steady subjects at such long focal lengths.  For sharp photos and video, the COOLPIX P500 meets that need with its hybrid vibration reduction (VR) stabilization system comprised of both image-sensor shift VR and electronic VR.  To further combat the effects of camera shake, an additional zoom control has been added to the side of the lens barrel to increase stability while shooting photos and video while handheld.

Utilizing the high-speed continuous shooting performance (capture five images at full resolution in approximately one second) of the CMOS sensor, the COOLPIX P500 includes Backlighting scene mode with an in-camera high dynamic range (HDR) function, which merges images of the same scene at different exposures to achieve a single image with a broad range of tonal detail. For additional low-light performance, the Night Landscape mode combines a series of consecutive shots taken at a fast shutter speed into a single image with reduced noise when taking handheld shots in night scenes. Additionally, the advanced Night Portrait mode, combines consecutive images of the background while the subject is captured using the flash to deliver beautiful night and indoor scenes.

To help users stay one step ahead of the action, a new shooting mode button facilitates quick setting of continuous frame shooting, in addition to the pre shooting cache that starts to snap photos before the button is fully depressed. Additionally, The COOLPIX P500 features a variety of advanced functions for the sophisticated user seeking smooth control with intuitively placed controls such as a new mode dial that enables easy setting of frequently used functions on the fly.

Other notable functions include full HD (1080p) movie recording with stereo sound and the ability to capture still images during recording, as well as the ability to utilize the expansive zoom range while recording, with autofocus. The camera can also adjust recording speed to create slow motion or high-speed special effects. The P500 also features a new Easy Panorama mode that creates dynamic panorama photos with a choice of directions and angles, automatically. To facilitate easy composing, viewing and playback of images and HD movies, the COOLPIX P500 also features a 3-inch high resolution (921,000-dot) vari-angle monitor.

The New COOLPIX S9100: Pocketable Power Zoom For the sophisticated traveler who needs portability and versatility, the new COOLPIX S9100 packs an impressive 18x wide-angle Zoom- NIKKOR ED glass lens into a stylish compact body -the most compact body of these three.  From wide-angle (25mm) to super-telephoto (450mm), the COOLPIX S9100 captures everything from sweeping landscapes to distant subjects confidently.  Ensuring exceptional image quality even when shooting in low-light conditions, the COOLPIX S9100 features a 12.1-megapixel backside illuminated CMOS sensor and ISO sensitivity up to 3200. The S9100 also includes Backlighting scene mode with HDR functionality built-in, Night Landscape mode, Night Portrait mode and Nikon’s hybrid VR image stabilization system.

For effortless operation when composing or sharing, the COOLPIX S9100 features a 3-inch high resolution, 921,000 dot LCD monitor with an enhanced user interface that enables easy composing and viewing, as well as a mode dial for smooth setting of frequently used functions.  The COOLPIX S9100 also includes full HD (1080p) movie recording with one-touch operation, optical zoom, stereo sound and the ability to capture still images during recording.  Putting the fun in functionality, the COOLPIX S9100 has a new Easy Panorama mode, and a variety of Special Effects for artistic photos and movies.

The New COOLPIX L120: Affordable Zoom Performance Making it easy and affordable to capture memorable family moments, the new COOLPIX L120 features a 21x Wide-Angle Zoom NIKKOR glass lens with side zoom control, 14.1-megapixel resolution, hybrid VR image stabilization system and high sensitivity up to ISO 6400 (reduced resolution) for beautiful photos in a variety of lighting conditions.  The COOLPIX L120 also features an Easy Auto mode that automatically selects the most appropriate scene mode by simply framing the subject, allowing the user to capture photos confidently and preserve special moments forever.

From school plays to soccer games, users can record every moment in HD video (720p) with a simple one-touch control button.  Composing and sharing photos and movies are also made easier with the COOLPIX L120’s 3-inch high resolution, 921,000 dot LCD monitor.  For the furry member of the family, the COOLPIX L120 includes a Pet Portrait mode that helps capture the expressions and actions of dogs and cats automatically.  The attractive styling and the convenience of AA battery operation makes the COOLPIX L120 an ideal camera for the busy family.

Pricing and Availability The Nikon COOLPIX P500 will be available in March 2011 for $399.95* MSRP, and will be available in black and red. The Nikon COOLPIX S9100 will be available in March 2011 for $329.95* MSRP in a variety of sophisticated colors including, black, red, and silver and The Nikon COOLPIX L120 will be available in late February 2011 for $279.95* MSRP in black, red and bronze.

Nikon Announces COOLPIX P300

Nikon has just announced the COOLPIX P300---a 12.2-megapixel back-lit CMOS sensor compact camera that features a wide-angle 4.2x NIKKOR glass lens (24mm-100mm, 35mm equivalent) with a maximum aperture of f/1.8---the widest aperture NIKKOR lens ever seen in a Nikon COOLPIX camera. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at this camera at CES last month, and was very intrigued by its professional look and feel and impressed with results of test shots, particularly when taking advantage of that wide aperture. The camera features full manual controls, ISO sensitivity up to 3200, shoots full HD (1080p) video, and has a high resolution 921,000-dot 3-inch LCD screen---the same featured on Nikon's flagship D3x DSLR. The P300 will be available for $329.95 in March. See the full press release below.

From Nikon:

MELVILLE, NY (Feb. 8, 2011) – Today, Nikon Inc. announced the new COOLPIX P300, Nikon’s first compact digital camera to feature a super-fast Wide-Angle 4.2x Zoom-NIKKOR glass lens (24mm-100mm, 35mm equivalent) with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 for capturing stunning, tack-sharp images and Full HD (1080p) video in a variety of lighting conditions. In addition to the widest aperture NIKKOR lens ever seen in a Nikon COOLPIX camera, the P300 also comes equipped with a 12.2-megapixel backside illumination CMOS sensor as well as a complement of other Nikon core technologies designed to prevail in even the most challenging light.

Created for the photo enthusiast who seeks creative control but will not compromise image quality for portability, the versatile P300 features manual controls, Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) technology, and ISO sensitivity up to 3200. These features help create low noise images and faster shutter speeds, which minimize motion blur in low-light conditions like night portraits, even when handheld.

“The COOLPIX P300 reflects decades of optical experience and NIKKOR heritage that culminate to create this exciting compact camera offering for users yearning for more creative freedom,”  said Bo Kajiwara, director of marketing, Nikon Inc.  “The P300 is an excellent choice for the photographer who is looking for a compact camera with all the manual controls and advanced features that challenges them to take their creativity to new heights.” Stunning Image Quality in Low-Light Conditions Demanding low-light conditions and creative barriers are no match for the new COOLPIX P300. Superior image quality in low-light settings is achieved because of the P300’s powerful combination of a 12.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, High ISO Sensitivity, and the fast wide-angle f/1.8 lens.  The CMOS sensor in the P300 is designed so that each pixel receives light more efficiently for superior performance. ISO performance of up to 3200 helps to ensure that images have low noise and amazing clarity while the wide aperture increases the amount of available light to the sensor. Nikon’s EXPEED C2 Image processing engine also participates in this phenomenal feat, enhancing overall speed and performance to deliver images that burst with vivid clarity and color. Taking Creativity to New Heights Designed to give users even more creative freedom in a compact body, the P300 comes equipped with several features commonly found in D-SLR cameras such Aperture Priority (A), Shutter Priority (S) and Full Manual (M) Control. Easily accessed through a top mounted control wheel, users are able to capture images missed by other cameras, while obtaining a desired look and feel to images by creatively adjusting shutter speed, depth of field, white balance and other settings. Users can also apply special effects to colors, and filter effects such as a cross screen or fisheye lens. The P300 also includes Nikon’s new Easy Panorama mode, to simply create vertical or horizontal panoramic shots automatically in-camera.  Users can quickly and easily apply these settings, as well as review and share photos on the P300’s high resolution 921,000-dot 3-inch, LCD screen.

The new COOLPIX P300 also features several improved scene modes including Advanced Night Portrait mode, Night Landscape mode, and Backlight high dynamic range (HDR) mode. When Advanced Night Portrait mode is engaged, the camera captures the essence of night scenes by combining multiple background shots along with a subject flash shot. In Backlight HDR mode, the P300 combines multiple shots at different exposures while Night Landscape mode combines multiple shots taken with a faster shutter speed for reduced noise and improved tonal range throughout the photo.

While image quality and low-light shooting are main facets of the COOLPIX P300, the camera also has incredible video capabilities. The P300 records high quality Full HD 1080p movies at 30 frames-per-second (fps) with autofocus, stereo sound and the ability to use the optical zoom. With the P300, users will be able to easily access the camera’s video controls through its one-touch operation. Additionally, the Special Effects mode and a Creative Slider mode will allow ever more creative freedom when recording both movies and still images. Users can also adjust the recording speed of their movies to apply slow motion or high-speed special effects. Additional COOLPIX Cameras Join the Low Light Fight In addition to the launch of the COOLPIX P300 today, Nikon also launched several other COOLPIX low light all stars today, including the COOLPIX P500 and the S9100. Like the P300, the P500 and S9100 capture sharp, crisp images in demanding low-light conditions with accurate detail with the assistance of their backside-illumination CMOS sensor and VR technology. The P500 also features Nikon’s first 36x wide-angle optical  Zoom NIKKOR ED glass lens with side zoom control and is versatile enough to capture photos that other cameras would miss. The S9100 is a full featured camera with a high-power 18x wide-angle optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens packed with high performance in compact, sophisticated designs for superior portability, which is equally stylish and useful. Pricing and Availability The COOLPIX P300 will be available beginning March 2010 and will retail for $329.95* MRSP and will be offered in black. The COOLPIX P500 will be available beginning March 2010 and will retail for $399.95* MRSP and will be offered in black and red.  The COOLPIX S9100 will be available March 2010 and will retail for $329.95* MRSP and will be offered in black, red, and silver.  For more information about these and other COOLPIX cameras, please visit www.nikonusa.com.
