Canon Announces PowerShot G1 X Camera

The latest offering in Canon's prosumer PowerShot G series is the new G1 X. Announced today---the first official day of CES---the G1 X features a 1.5-inch 14.3-megapixel CMOS sensor (compared to the G12's 1/1.7-inch 10MP CCD sensor) as well as Canon's DIGIC 5 image processor. It also boasts an ISO range of up to 12800 for low-light capture and an f/2.8-f/16 4x optical zoom lens. With a price tag of $800, the G1 X costs as much, if not more, than an entry-level Canon DSLR, which might turn off those photographers who are shopping around for a next level camera to step up their image quality and feature set from a compact point-and-shoot, especially if they're looking to get into a system with interchangeable lenses. However, the Canon G series has for more than a decade now been a favorite everywhere camera for professional and enthusiast shutterbugs when they need to reach for a more portable option that will still make great images.

The Canon G1 X will be available for $799.99 in February.

CEA Hosts Best Shots Photo Contest

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), which hosts the CES mega tech show every year, is also hosting a photo competition. The Best Shots Photo Contest invites shutterbugs to enter photos for the chance to win great prizes and have their images viewed by visitors of the CES show. The grand prize winner, to be announced January 13, 2012, at the 2012 International CES, will receive a Nikon D3100 DSLR camera and a 55-200mm zoom lens.

Hands-on with Sony HX7V and TX100V

CES 2011, Las Vegas---Sony's latest Cyber-shot announcements stood out this week at CES because they are the world’s first compact digital still cameras to include 3D Still Image mode using only one lens and imager, wherein the camera takes "two shots in different focus positions to calculate the depths, and then it creates left-eye and right-eye images to produce a 3D effect." I was excited to check out two of these compact 16.2-megapixel CMOS sensor cameras in particular on the show floor---the HX7V and the TX100V. The HX7V follows last year's HX5V, and carries over many of its features, including Sony's “Exmor R” back-illuminated CMOS sensor technology, but it also has upgrades such as 3D image capture using 3D Sweep Panorama mode or the new 3D Still Image mode. I really like the way this slim camera feels in-hand because it has a little weight to it and a textured rubber grip on the front. It feels solid and expensive (and, well, you can make the call about the latter claim; it's priced at $300 as of now). The TX100V is the first Cyber-shot to have a 3.5-inch OLED with touch screen, which Sony claims provides more vibrancy and a faster response time than an LCD. The touch screen was very responsive when I tested it out. It's a gorgeous little camera that packs a lot of features---actual fun, useful features---into its sleek little body, and I'd love to spend even more time with it soon.

Hands-on GE's New Superzoom Camera & Waterproof Pocket Camcorder

CES 2011, Las Vegas---GE has long been a household name, though not necessarily when it comes to digital imaging. Over the past few years, however, they have been creeping into the digital camera market with their stylish and very competitively priced digicams. The new lineup from CES 2011 includes some cameras that should put the brand on the map when it comes to affordable, feature-packed compact cameras and camcorders. The ultra compact, 15x zoom GE PowerPro X500 is shaped like most other longzoom compacts, with an exaggerated grip and a lot of glass shining on the front, but the body is even smaller than most I've seen in the category. And the price? Well, that's also much smaller at $149 (tentatively). The 16-megapixel X500 has an electronic view finder, in-camera HDR mode, optical image stabilization, supports ISOs up to 3200, shoots HD video (720p), and comes in black or a polished white color. The zoom was very smooth when I played with it and the view finder was a nice, more professional-feeling touch, though it was quite tiny and I had to squint pretty hard to look through it.

The waterproof, shockproof, dustproof GE DV1 pocket camcorder was another nice surprise from the new lineup. At $129 (tentatively) it is also much more affordable than its competitors, and records full 1080p HD video. The DV1, though very compact and cutely styled, feels pretty solid in-hand due to its metal chassis, and it also features a 2.5-inch LCD and built-in USB. The DV1 has a 4x zoom and shoots 5MP still images, even when in video record mode. I can see this being a fun family pocket camcorder, which will withstand the kind of trauma a family who has fun with put it through.

Hands-on with Olympus PEN E-PL2

CES 2011, Las Vegas---I can confirm now that the new Olympus PEN E-PL2 is, in fact, more ergonomically comfortable, the layout more functional. The on/off button is now recessed so that there's no chance of clicking it rather than the shutter release. After all, that was one of the resolved issues that Olympus touted when they announced this new, fourth generation compact, interchangeable lens PEN camera on Wednesday. There aren't so many other noticeable changes from the PEN E-PL1, though the 460,000 dot LCD is much brighter than that of its predecessor. The new camera was modeled on its predecessor---and underwent a few little tweaks based on user feedback---in order to emerge as this slightly altered, still feature-packed, powerful image maker in a small package. The Art Filters (still the most well done out of any I've seen from the several companies who now include similar modes in their equipment), the Live Guide feature, the Intelligent Auto mode, and the DSLR-sized image sensor were all carried over from the previous model. Think of it as a face lift, really---the subtle kind that makes a person look refreshed rather than scary.

Hands-on with Samsung NX11

CES 2011, Las Vegas---The new Samsung NX11 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera is the latest in the company's successful NX lineup, following the NX10, which we really enjoyed testing last summer. (For more information on the technology of interchangeable lens cameras, check out the NX10 link.) The upgrades to the new NX11 include the i-function lens, which allows for full manual shooting controls (aperture, shutter speed, EV, WB, and ISO) via the i-function button or ring on the lens---allowing the photographer to control these settings easily, without taking the camera off the subject. The NX11 continues to use the APS-C size image sensor (which is larger than that of the micro four thirds sensor) for advanced image quality in a compact body.

Hands-on with Panasonic Lumix GF2

CES 2011, Las Vegas---The Panasonic Lumix GF2, announced late this fall, is the successor to the GF1 which we were quite impressed with when we reviewed it. The Micro Four Thirds system camera is as lightweight as a compact digicam and shoots with DSLR quality. This new GF2 can now handle ISOs up to 6400 and has a slightly smaller, lighter body than its predecessor. Panasonic has still forgone a viewfinder, which would make this lady happy, though it can be fitted with an optional EVF accessory.I look forward to more time with this sleek little guy.

Hands-on with Casio TRYX

CES 2011, Las Vegas---Yesterday's splashiest Casio announcement, the innovative, flexible new TRYX camera, had me excited to get my hands on a model on the CES show floor. The pre-production model---although slightly, expectantly, glitchy---was fun to play with and surprisingly lightweight. The twisty-turny possibilities are essentially endless, allowing you to hold it like a mini camcorder for shooting video or face it toward you for self-portraits, and the touch screen is quick and responsive. The HDR Art mode offers an extra boost to the ubiquitous new feature of built-in HDR capture. I could see the TRYX being a fun pocket cam for casual shooting at parties, and for capturing unique angles when traveling.

Olympus Announces PEN E-PL2 Interchangeable Lens Camera

CES 2011, Las Vegas--- Olympus announced today the fourth generation camera in their compact, interchangeable lens PEN lineup. The PEN E-PL2 follows last year's PEN E-PL1, with upgrades that include: Live Guide II to preview HD video (720p), a 3-inch 460,000 dot LCD, increased ISO sensitivity and what they are saying is a more ergonomic body design, which we'll get to check out on the show floor tomorrow. Advanced Video Capture

With full HD 1920 x 1080 at 60p video capability, the DSC-TX100V camera provides stunning, fast motion video smoother playback when shooting action such as sports and capturing better still images when clipping from video. The DSC-TX10, DSC-HX7V, DSC-WX10 and DSC-WX9 cameras record crystal clear movies at 60i in 1080 AVCHD format. Borrowed from the Handycam® camcorder line, these new cameras have Dual Rec mode which can shoot video, while simultaneously capturing 3-megapixel digital still pictures (2-megapixel in 4:3 ratio when recording in MP4). The cameras feature a dedicated still image button and a dedicated movie capture button to make it easy to use for consumers. Dual Rec does not work in 60p mode.

Create Personal 3D Content

Sony makes it easy to create personal 3D content that can be viewed on an HDTV with 3D home theater system. 3D images can be captured using 3D Sweep Panorama™ mode or the new 3D Still Image mode. In this mode, the camera takes two consecutive shots in different focus positions to calculate the depths, and then it creates left-eye and right-eye images to produce a 3D effect. These images can be enjoyed in 2D or stunning 3D on compatible 3D televisions like Sony’s new BRAVIA® KDL-HX820 models (3D-compatible HDMI™ cables and 3D glasses are also required and are sold separately). The 3D Sweep Panorama™ feature lets you take panoramic pictures in one press-and-sweep motion. The high-speed burst of frames is stitched together using innovative processing techniques to automatically create detail-packed 3D panoramas. These cameras will let you view images in a whole new way. Unlike 3D Sweep Panorama mode, which lets you view your 3D images on compatible 3D television systems, Sweep Multi Angle™ lets you view images moving in simulated 3D right on the cameras’ LCD screen (or OLED with touch screen using the DSC-TX100V) by tilting the camera back and forth. Easy Menu Selection Technology

They automatically recognize the correct scene mode, then quickly shoot and combine up to six multi-shots to produce images with greater clarity, optimum dynamic range using backlight correction HDR technology and lower image noise using six-shot Multi-shot Layering technology. Improving simplicity from previous Cyber-shot models which featured nine scene modes, the new DSC-TX100V model offers 36 Still Picture Mode scenes and Movie Mode scenes. The DSC-TX100V and DSC-HX7V cameras automatically detect a combination of scenes and conditions, making it even easier for consumers to get the best shot. Using the DSC-TX100V model’s Intelligent Scene Recognition feature, there are 12 recognized scenes including the new Infant, Spotlight and Low Light. Using the DSC-HX7V camera, there are four recognized conditions including Motion during Movie Designed to help users learn about the cameras’ features and how to use them on the spot, the “In-Camera Guide” is accessible from the menu button on the camera. Casio Announces the Innovative New TRYX

CES, Las Vegas: Casio has just announced a new and innovative digital camera---the TRYX. Available in April for $249.99, the TRYX catches your attention first because of its distinctive design, which is unlike anything the digital camera sphere has seen before (it looks more like a smart phone at first glance), and of which Casio says, "Thanks to its super thin (.59-inches thick), variable frame design, TRYX can adapt to fit the user’s preferred shooting style or to help them capture an image from just about any angle or in any environment. Users can hold the camera horizontally, in a traditional point-and-shoot style to capture still images or flip out the rotating, three-inch, touch-screen LCD and swivel the body to experience countless other positions. The frame rotates 360-degrees and can be adjusted so that the body can act as a tripod, allowing TRYX to stand on its own, or the LCD screen can be rotated up to 270-degrees so that users can perfect their own self portrait and see themselves in the frame."

But what of the image making capabilities, Casio? "In addition to its good looks, the Casio TRYX also boasts an equally impressive feature set." I see. Canon Announces New Powershot A-series Digital Cameras

CES hasn't even officially begun and already the announcements are rolling out. Canon has announced four new, affordable, feature-packed A-series digicams: the PowerShot A3300 IS (image above), A2200, A1200 and A800. Of the new lineup, Canon says, "When capturing irreplaceable moments, it is important to use a camera that inspires artistic expression in a simplistic format," and that's essentially what they've done here. The new A-series cameras come equipped with Creative Filters, including Toy Camera and Monochrome mode; the PowerShot A3300 IS, A2200 and A1200 each have Live View Control and 32 predefined shooting situations within the advanced Smart AUTO feature; the A1200 has an actual Optical View Finder!---and all three of these cameras will retail for under $180. The $109.99 A1200 features 720p HD video, a 12.1-Megapixel CCD sensor, 4x Optical Zoom, a wide angle 28-112mm equivalent lens and a 2.7-inch LCD screen. At CES, Sony has announced two new Cyber-shot cameras---the DSC-HX5V and DSC-TX7---which are "the world's first compact digital still cameras to include full HD (1920 x 1080 60i) Advanced Video Codec High Definition (AVCHD) video capability. They are also the world’s smallest and thinnest AVCHD capable cameras," according to the manufacturer.

From Sony: Sony took the wraps off two new Cyber-shot® digital still cameras today that create a new standard of mobility with technologies that answer consumers’ on-the-go needs.

Sony has designed two new innovative Cyber-shot cameras (models DSC-HX5V and DSC-TX7) that are the world’s first compact digital still cameras to include full HD (1920 x 1080 60i) Advanced Video Codec High Definition (AVCHD) video capability. They are also the world’s smallest and thinnest AVCHD capable cameras.

These are the first Cyber-shot cameras with an in-camera Backlight Correction High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature for managing difficult lighting situations and TransferJet™ wireless technology for sharing, storing and viewing images. The HX5V model is also the world’s first still camera to include GPS + Compass and Optical SteadyShot™ with Active Mode technologies.

With Sony’s “Exmor R” back illuminated CMOS sensor technology, these cameras provide excellent low-light performance, 10fps burst shooting and the new Intelligent Sweep Panorama™ feature.

In addition to its cameras, Sony introduced three other devices with TransferJet technology at CES, including a Sony Memory Stick® memory card (model MS-JX8G) with a wireless transmitter/receiver, a Sony TransferJet Station (model TJS-1) and a VAIO® F Series notebook.

“Adding to the outstanding low-light performance and impressive Sweep Panorama feature, we are providing high-quality movies with full HD video, stereo sound recording when capturing movies on the go and an in-camera HDR solution for capturing high-contrast scenery. High-Quality Stills and Videos

With the AVCHD format, these new cameras record movies in 1920 x 1080 full HD resolution at 60i in 17Mbps. The AVCHD format captures a high degree of detail and smooth movement, and when footage is burned to disc, it can be played back on your HDTV using most Blu-ray Disc™ players, Sony® PlayStation®3 systems and compatible Blu-ray Disc enabled PCs. In addition to the supplied PMB software for Windows users, it is also possible to edit recorded AVCHD file using iMovie® for Macintosh users.

The camera will also capture videos in the MP4 format (up to 1440 x1080 30p 12Mbps) for online sharing.

Managing Difficult Lighting

The HX5V and TX7 cameras offer in-camera multi-shot High Dynamic Range (HDR), which combines highlight and shadow detail of two separate captures into one remarkably natural looking image—even without a tripod.

HDR offers a solution for strong backlight situations which typically result in either dark shadows in the foreground or a washed out background. Sony’s “Exmor R” sensor and BIONZ™ processor help to correct these issues.

Vivitar Announces Four Super Affordable Compact Cameras

At CES, Vivitar announced some extremely competitively priced compact point-and-shoot cameras with some pretty impressive specs. Not being as familiar with their image quality, I'd like to check out the noise levels in the 14.1MP VF540, which also boasts GPS tagging.

From Vivitar: Vivitar, a leading brand of digital cameras and photographic accessories for over 70 years, returns to CES with their latest collection of affordable, multi-functional digital products. This year’s roundup of innovative digital cameras packs loads of features in sleek, easy-to-use devices.

The ViviCam V5028 is a twin-view, 5.1 Megapixel camera. The 1.8” preview screen enables easy self-portrait shots and viewing.  The compact device has 4x digital zoom, face detection and anti-shake capabilities, with a USB connection.  This camera uses 3 AAA batteries and will capture loads of memories at an SRP of just $69.

Casio Announces Four EXILIM Cameras

At CES, Casio has announced four new EXILIM compact cameras---the HIGH SPEED EXILIM EX-FH100, EXILIM EX-H15, EX-Z2000 and EX-Z550.

Art Shot Function: Shoot photographs that look like paintings The Art Shot Function makes use of the image processing technology in the EXILIM Engine 5.0 to create photos of scenery or human subjects that have the feel of a painting. Panasonic Announces Lumix DMC-F3

At CES, Panasonic has announced the new Lumix DMC-F3 12.1MP "entry-level" compact camera, which boasts 4x optical zoom and HD video (1280 x 720p/30fps).

Panasonic today introduces a new entry-level digital camera, the LUMIX DMC-F3, which has been designed with simplicity in mind, without overlooking the importance of style and performance. The 12.1-Megapixel LUMIX DMC-F3 has an impressive 4x optical zoom, considering its small size, as well as Panasonic’s shooting-assistant, Auto Scene Mode. Sony Announces first CCD Cameras w/Sweep Panorama Technology

At CES, Sony has announced two new 14MP Cyber-shot cameras---the DSC-W370 and DSC-W350---with a CCD image sensor that provides the Sweep Panorama mode that we first saw at PMA last year in the Sony DMC-HX1 mid-range camera.

From Sony: Sony today announced two new 14 MP Cyber-shot® cameras (models DSC-W370 and DSC-W350) with a CCD image sensor that provides the innovative Sweep Panorama™ feature in a slim, compact body, making it easy to get the best shot.

Sony also announced three cameras (models DSC-W330, DSC-W310 and DSC-S2100) that offer a new thin, stylish design with advanced features such as longer zoom and wide-angle lenses, which provide versatility when shooting.

“We’re expanding Sweep Panorama, which has been such a well received feature, to our more affordable models,” said Kelly Davis, director of the Digital Imaging business at Sony Electronics. “Allowing users to capture the impact of a full panoramic scene with an easy to use, practical camera provides a great value to our customers.”

Innovative Sweep Panorama™ Technology

Sweep Panorama mode, first introduced in Sony’s breakthrough Cyber-shot DSC-HX1, DSC-TX1 and DSC-WX1 CMOS models, utilizes a CCD sensor to capture dramatic panoramic scenes. The W370 and W350 cameras shoot images continuously to capture wide landscapes or tall buildings in one easy “press and sweep” motion. They automatically stitch the images together to create one stunning panoramic photo.

The W370 and W350 Cyber-shot models can take up to 243 and 268-degree panorama shots, respectively, in one easy press-and-sweep motion with an image size of 7152 x 1080 (horizontal wide panorama mode).

Samsung Announces NX10

Samsung has announced the NX10, which they will be unveiling at CES this week in Las Vegas. DP first got a taste of this camera at PMA in March of 2009. According to the manufacturer, the "NX10 has the heart of a D-SLR embedded inside the compact frame of a digital camera, successfully integrating the APS-C size CMOS sensor with a mirrorless interchangeable lens, for a sleek, lightweight camera that users can easily take with them everywhere they go."

The Best of 2009- CES

With CES 2010 approaching next week, let's take a look back at what made waves in the digital photo world at CES Las Vegas 2009, earlier this year:

- The Sony Cyber-shot G3 impressed us when it was unveiled as the the world’s first Wi-Fi enabled camera (we later covered it in a full-length review in the Digital Photographer spring 2009 issue), and the Micro Four-Thirds Panasonic Lumix G1 wowed us as well, and it ended up being included in our "Editors' Picks" guide for the best gear in the Digital Photographer winter 2009 issue. We also got to check out the Sony Webbie HD camcorders, which are ideal for uploading straight to sites like YouTube.

- Other exciting products at CES '09 included: the Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 (which we went on to do a full-length review of in the Digital Photographer fall 2009 issue), the Samsung HMX-H106 flagship camcorder, the Canon Vixia HF S10 camcorder, and  the Pentax K2000D and K20D D-SLRs.
