Canon Announces PowerShot G1 X Camera

digital photographer

The latest offering in Canon's prosumer PowerShot G series is the new G1 X. Announced today---the first official day of CES---the G1 X features a 1.5-inch 14.3-megapixel CMOS sensor (compared to the G12's 1/1.7-inch 10MP CCD sensor) as well as Canon's DIGIC 5 image processor. It also boasts an ISO range of up to 12800 for low-light capture and an f/2.8-f/16 4x optical zoom lens. With a price tag of $800, the G1 X costs as much, if not more, than an entry-level Canon DSLR, which might turn off those photographers who are shopping around for a next level camera to step up their image quality and feature set from a compact point-and-shoot, especially if they're looking to get into a system with interchangeable lenses. However, the Canon G series has for more than a decade now been a favorite everywhere camera for professional and enthusiast shutterbugs when they need to reach for a more portable option that will still make great images.

The Canon G1 X will be available for $799.99 in February.

Hands-on with Sony HX7V and TX100V

Sony DSC-HX7V and DSC-TX100V

CES 2011, Las Vegas---Sony's latest Cyber-shot announcements stood out this week at CES because they are the world’s first compact digital still cameras to include 3D Still Image mode using only one lens and imager, wherein the camera takes "two shots in different focus positions to calculate the depths, and then it creates left-eye and right-eye images to produce a 3D effect." I was excited to check out two of these compact 16.2-megapixel CMOS sensor cameras in particular on the show floor---the HX7V and the TX100V. The HX7V follows last year's HX5V, and carries over many of its features, including Sony's “Exmor R” back-illuminated CMOS sensor technology, but it also has upgrades such as 3D image capture using 3D Sweep Panorama mode or the new 3D Still Image mode. I really like the way this slim camera feels in-hand because it has a little weight to it and a textured rubber grip on the front. It feels solid and expensive (and, well, you can make the call about the latter claim; it's priced at $300 as of now). The TX100V is the first Cyber-shot to have a 3.5-inch OLED with touch screen, which Sony claims provides more vibrancy and a faster response time than an LCD. The touch screen was very responsive when I tested it out. It's a gorgeous little camera that packs a lot of features---actual fun, useful features---into its sleek little body, and I'd love to spend even more time with it soon.

Hands-on GE's New Superzoom Camera & Waterproof Pocket Camcorder

digital photographer

CES 2011, Las Vegas---GE has long been a household name, though not necessarily when it comes to digital imaging. Over the past few years, however, they have been creeping into the digital camera market with their stylish and very competitively priced digicams. The new lineup from CES 2011 includes some cameras that should put the brand on the map when it comes to affordable, feature-packed compact cameras and camcorders. The ultra compact, 15x zoom GE PowerPro X500 is shaped like most other longzoom compacts, with an exaggerated grip and a lot of glass shining on the front, but the body is even smaller than most I've seen in the category. And the price? Well, that's also much smaller at $149 (tentatively). The 16-megapixel X500 has an electronic view finder, in-camera HDR mode, optical image stabilization, supports ISOs up to 3200, shoots HD video (720p), and comes in black or a polished white color. The zoom was very smooth when I played with it and the view finder was a nice, more professional-feeling touch, though it was quite tiny and I had to squint pretty hard to look through it.

The waterproof, shockproof, dustproof GE DV1 pocket camcorder was another nice surprise from the new lineup. At $129 (tentatively) it is also much more affordable than its competitors, and records full 1080p HD video. The DV1, though very compact and cutely styled, feels pretty solid in-hand due to its metal chassis, and it also features a 2.5-inch LCD and built-in USB. The DV1 has a 4x zoom and shoots 5MP still images, even when in video record mode. I can see this being a fun family pocket camcorder, which will withstand the kind of trauma a family who has fun with put it through.

Hands-on with Olympus PEN E-PL2

digital photographer

CES 2011, Las Vegas---I can confirm now that the new Olympus PEN E-PL2 is, in fact, more ergonomically comfortable, the layout more functional. The on/off button is now recessed so that there's no chance of clicking it rather than the shutter release. After all, that was one of the resolved issues that Olympus touted when they announced this new, fourth generation compact, interchangeable lens PEN camera on Wednesday. There aren't so many other noticeable changes from the PEN E-PL1, though the 460,000 dot LCD is much brighter than that of its predecessor. The new camera was modeled on its predecessor---and underwent a few little tweaks based on user feedback---in order to emerge as this slightly altered, still feature-packed, powerful image maker in a small package. The Art Filters (still the most well done out of any I've seen from the several companies who now include similar modes in their equipment), the Live Guide feature, the Intelligent Auto mode, and the DSLR-sized image sensor were all carried over from the previous model. Think of it as a face lift, really---the subtle kind that makes a person look refreshed rather than scary.

Hands-on with Samsung NX11

digital photographer

CES 2011, Las Vegas---The new Samsung NX11 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera is the latest in the company's successful NX lineup, following the NX10, which we really enjoyed testing last summer. (For more information on the technology of interchangeable lens cameras, check out the NX10 link.) The upgrades to the new NX11 include the i-function lens, which allows for full manual shooting controls (aperture, shutter speed, EV, WB, and ISO) via the i-function button or ring on the lens---allowing the photographer to control these settings easily, without taking the camera off the subject. The NX11 continues to use the APS-C size image sensor (which is larger than that of the micro four thirds sensor) for advanced image quality in a compact body.

Hands-on with Panasonic Lumix GF2

digital photographer

CES 2011, Las Vegas---The Panasonic Lumix GF2, announced late this fall, is the successor to the GF1 which we were quite impressed with when we reviewed it. The Micro Four Thirds system camera is as lightweight as a compact digicam and shoots with DSLR quality. This new GF2 can now handle ISOs up to 6400 and has a slightly smaller, lighter body than its predecessor. Panasonic has still forgone a viewfinder, which would make this lady happy, though it can be fitted with an optional EVF accessory.I look forward to more time with this sleek little guy.

Hands-on with Casio TRYX

digital photographer

CES 2011, Las Vegas---Yesterday's splashiest Casio announcement, the innovative, flexible new TRYX camera, had me excited to get my hands on a model on the CES show floor. The pre-production model---although slightly, expectantly, glitchy---was fun to play with and surprisingly lightweight. The twisty-turny possibilities are essentially endless, allowing you to hold it like a mini camcorder for shooting video or face it toward you for self-portraits, and the touch screen is quick and responsive. The HDR Art mode offers an extra boost to the ubiquitous new feature of built-in HDR capture. I could see the TRYX being a fun pocket cam for casual shooting at parties, and for capturing unique angles when traveling.

Olympus Announces PEN E-PL2 Interchangeable Lens Camera

digital photographer

CES 2011, Las Vegas--- Olympus announced today the fourth generation camera in their compact, interchangeable lens PEN lineup. The PEN E-PL2 follows last year's PEN E-PL1, with upgrades that include: Live Guide II to preview HD video (720p), a 3-inch 460,000 dot LCD, increased ISO sensitivity and what they are saying is a more ergonomic body design, which we'll get to check out on the show floor tomorrow. The 12.3-megapixel PEN E-PL2 will be available with the kit MSC M. ZUIKO DIGITAL ED m14-42mm f3.5/5.6 Zoom Lens for $599.99. Read the full press release below. From Olympus:

From Sony:

LAS VEGAS (CES Booth #14200), Jan. 5, 2010 – Sony today unveiled five new Cyber-shot® digital still cameras that make it easy to get DSLR-like quality still images, stunning 3D photos and high-quality full HD videos. Sony has designed five new innovative 16.2-megapixel Cyber-shot cameras (models DSC-TX100V, DSC-TX10, DSC-HX7V, DSC-WX10 and DSC-WX9) that are the world’s first compact digital still cameras to include 3D Still Image mode for taking 3D images using only one lens and imager. They also have innovative Dual Rec (record) technology, for taking still photos during video capture. The DSC-TX100V camera is the world’s first compact digital still camera to include full HD (1920 x 1080/60p) video capability. This format provides the least distortion for playback on a high definition television.

The TX100V is also the first Cyber-shot camera with a 3.5-inch OLED with touch screen that provides deeper blacks and more vibrant color contrast on the screen, all while being thinner and having a faster response time than most LCDs. It’s also useful when shooting movies. Additionally, the DSC-WX10 camera is one of the only digital still cameras to include a high-speed linear auto focus feature that provides quick and precise focusing similar to the speed of a DSLR camera. “Sony is one of the first camera manufacturers in the industry to provide a 16.2MP CMOS sensor, which is a great benefit for consumers,” said Kelly Davis, director of the digital imaging group at Sony Electronics. “They are getting the best image quality as well as all of the benefits of the “Exmor R” CMOS sensor technology in very compact, stylish cameras.”

With Sony’s 16.2-megapixel “Exmor R” back-illuminated CMOS sensor technology, these models provide excellent low-light performance, up to 10fps burst shooting and the Intelligent Sweep Panorama™ feature. “The DSC-WX10 and DSC-WX9 Cyber-shot cameras are technology packed CMOS models providing the consumer with great “Exmor R” features such as low light, 3D Still Image/3D Sweep Panorama mode and AVCHD™ video all in a compact size with a wide, bright lens,” Davis added. “The DSC-HX7V camera builds upon the success of last year’s DSC-HX5Vand continues to improve, while addressing the growth in the compact high-zoom camera segment. With the best of Sony’s technologies, the DSC-TX100V is an ultra slim, sleek camera that can go anywhere and do everything. Its sibling, the DSC-TX10 camera, is a technology-packed, ultra slim, fashionable T-series camera that is also durable.”

Advanced Video Capture

With full HD 1920 x 1080 at 60p video capability, the DSC-TX100V camera provides stunning, fast motion video smoother playback when shooting action such as sports and capturing better still images when clipping from video. The DSC-TX10, DSC-HX7V, DSC-WX10 and DSC-WX9 cameras record crystal clear movies at 60i in 1080 AVCHD format. Borrowed from the Handycam® camcorder line, these new cameras have Dual Rec mode which can shoot video, while simultaneously capturing 3-megapixel digital still pictures (2-megapixel in 4:3 ratio when recording in MP4). The cameras feature a dedicated still image button and a dedicated movie capture button to make it easy to use for consumers. Dual Rec does not work in 60p mode.

Create Personal 3D Content

Sony makes it easy to create personal 3D content that can be viewed on an HDTV with 3D home theater system. 3D images can be captured using 3D Sweep Panorama™ mode or the new 3D Still Image mode. In this mode, the camera takes two consecutive shots in different focus positions to calculate the depths, and then it creates left-eye and right-eye images to produce a 3D effect. These images can be enjoyed in 2D or stunning 3D on compatible 3D televisions like Sony’s new BRAVIA® KDL-HX820 models (3D-compatible HDMI™ cables and 3D glasses are also required and are sold separately). The 3D Sweep Panorama™ feature lets you take panoramic pictures in one press-and-sweep motion. The high-speed burst of frames is stitched together using innovative processing techniques to automatically create detail-packed 3D panoramas. These cameras will let you view images in a whole new way. Unlike 3D Sweep Panorama mode, which lets you view your 3D images on compatible 3D television systems, Sweep Multi Angle™ lets you view images moving in simulated 3D right on the cameras’ LCD screen (or OLED with touch screen using the DSC-TX100V) by tilting the camera back and forth. This shooting feature captures 15 images at different angles and then compiles them into one photo, creating a 3D-like effect on the display.

Easy Menu Selection Technology

With improved Superior Auto and Intelligent Auto modes, all of the new cameras capture more dynamic pictures. They automatically recognize the correct scene mode, then quickly shoot and combine up to six multi-shots to produce images with greater clarity, optimum dynamic range using backlight correction HDR technology and lower image noise using six-shot Multi-shot Layering technology. Improving simplicity from previous Cyber-shot models which featured nine scene modes, the new DSC-TX100V model offers 36 Still Picture Mode scenes and Movie Mode scenes. The DSC-TX100V and DSC-HX7V cameras automatically detect a combination of scenes and conditions, making it even easier for consumers to get the best shot. Using the DSC-TX100V model’s Intelligent Scene Recognition feature, there are 12 recognized scenes including the new Infant, Spotlight and Low Light. Using the DSC-HX7V camera, there are four recognized conditions including Motion during Movie Designed to help users learn about the cameras’ features and how to use them on the spot, the “In-Camera Guide” is accessible from the menu button on the camera. Users can search by purpose or keyword and easily access the functions they seek. These cameras also have Background Defocus mode, which highlights your subject like a DSLR; Soft Skin mode, which reduces visible blemishes and wrinkles and Natural Flash, which corrects color balance for more natural shots. All five cameras also offer fast capture with up to 10fps at full 16.2-megapixel resolution. With a 10x optical zoom Sony® G lens and a compact camera body, the DSC- HX7V model offers built-in GPS and Compass which records the location and direction of where photos were taken. The DSC-WX10 camera features a 7x, bright F2.4 24mm wide angle lens and the high-speed auto focus feature; whereas the DSC-WX9 camera has a 5x 25mm wide angle lens for capturing the perfect group shot or landscape in one shot. You can view your images on the DSC-WX9 camera’s 921,000 Xtra-Fine LCD with the new Control Wheel. With Backlight Correction HDR (High Dynamic Range) in the Scene Selection Shooting mode, these cameras make it easy to get the best shot in difficult lighting conditions. The DSC-TX100V model has an HDR feature that compiles the highlights, mid-tones and shadows from three separate shots to create one realistic-looking photo. The DSC-TX10, DSC-HX7V, DSC- WX10 and DSC-WX9 cameras compile two images in Backlight Correction HDR mode, enabling crisp details in difficult lighting.

DSLR Speed

With the new high-speed auto focus feature, the DSC-WX10 camera provides a smarter way to focus with DSLR-like speed. Instead of having a mechanical gear to drive the AutoFocus, the DSC-WX10 camera has a magnetic coil (like those used in an audio speaker) to move the lens linearly and achieve AutoFocus in a straight back-and-forth motion—not rotationally. A Little Water, Dust or Ice? Bring It On Where conversation piece meets workhorse is the 16.2-megapixel Sony Cyber- shot DSC-TX10 camera. It is waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and freeze-proof compliant, offers HD movie and 3D photo capture, plus Intelligent Sweep Panorama, an “Exmor R” CMOS sensor that promises crisp clear photos even in low light and a 3- inch LCD with touch screen. Waterproof in up to 16 feet of water for an hour and shockproof up to five feet, the DSC-TX10 model lets you take high-quality photos, including panoramic pictures. It also lets you take Full HD 1080i videos of your friends, family or pets underwater. From the tropics to the top of the mountain, the camera is also freeze proof down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, so you can take pictures on your next snowbound adventure. Not only is it good to go in chilly weather, but the sleek DSC-TX10 camera is durable enough to withstand an accidental drop from up to approximately five feet. Additionally, it is dust proof thanks to its airtight construction, so you can take it with you wherever the dust might kick up.

Casio Announces the Innovative New TRYX

digital photographer

CES, Las Vegas: Casio has just announced a new and innovative digital camera---the TRYX. Available in April for $249.99, the TRYX catches your attention first because of its distinctive design, which is unlike anything the digital camera sphere has seen before (it looks more like a smart phone at first glance), and of which Casio says, "Thanks to its super thin (.59-inches thick), variable frame design, TRYX can adapt to fit the user’s preferred shooting style or to help them capture an image from just about any angle or in any environment. Users can hold the camera horizontally, in a traditional point-and-shoot style to capture still images or flip out the rotating, three-inch, touch-screen LCD and swivel the body to experience countless other positions. The frame rotates 360-degrees and can be adjusted so that the body can act as a tripod, allowing TRYX to stand on its own, or the LCD screen can be rotated up to 270-degrees so that users can perfect their own self portrait and see themselves in the frame."

But what of the image making capabilities, Casio? "In addition to its good looks, the Casio TRYX also boasts an equally impressive feature set." I see. The camera has a 12.1-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, full-HD 1080 video (30fps), Slide Panorama mode to capture 360-degree panoramic images and slow-motion video, and a 21mm ultra-wide-angle lens. Sony Announces First Compact Cameras w/HD 1080i AVCHD Video

digital photographer

SonyCyber-shot_DSC-TX7_all_closed_lg At CES, Sony has announced two new Cyber-shot cameras---the DSC-HX5V and DSC-TX7---which are "the world's first compact digital still cameras to include full HD (1920 x 1080 60i) Advanced Video Codec High Definition (AVCHD) video capability. They are also the world’s smallest and thinnest AVCHD capable cameras," according to the manufacturer.

From Sony: Sony took the wraps off two new Cyber-shot® digital still cameras today that create a new standard of mobility with technologies that answer consumers’ on-the-go needs.

Sony has designed two new innovative Cyber-shot cameras (models DSC-HX5V and DSC-TX7) that are the world’s first compact digital still cameras to include full HD (1920 x 1080 60i) Advanced Video Codec High Definition (AVCHD) video capability. They are also the world’s smallest and thinnest AVCHD capable cameras.

These are the first Cyber-shot cameras with an in-camera Backlight Correction High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature for managing difficult lighting situations and TransferJet™ wireless technology for sharing, storing and viewing images. The HX5V model is also the world’s first still camera to include GPS + Compass and Optical SteadyShot™ with Active Mode technologies.

With Sony’s “Exmor R” back illuminated CMOS sensor technology, these cameras provide excellent low-light performance, 10fps burst shooting and the new Intelligent Sweep Panorama™ feature.

In addition to its cameras, Sony introduced three other devices with TransferJet technology at CES, including a Sony Memory Stick® memory card (model MS-JX8G) with a wireless transmitter/receiver, a Sony TransferJet Station (model TJS-1) and a VAIO® F Series notebook.

“Adding to the outstanding low-light performance and impressive Sweep Panorama feature, we are providing high-quality movies with full HD video, stereo sound recording when capturing movies on the go and an in-camera HDR solution for capturing high-contrast scenery. Sony can provide these solutions because of its expertise with other imaging products including Handycam® camcorders and α DSLR cameras,” said Kelly Davis, director of the Digital Imaging business at Sony Electronics. “Our goal is not only to make it easy for consumers to get the best shot—still or video—but also to have the best sharing experience.”

High-Quality Stills and Videos

With the AVCHD format, these new cameras record movies in 1920 x 1080 full HD resolution at 60i in 17Mbps. The AVCHD format captures a high degree of detail and smooth movement, and when footage is burned to disc, it can be played back on your HDTV using most Blu-ray Disc™ players, Sony® PlayStation®3 systems and compatible Blu-ray Disc enabled PCs. In addition to the supplied PMB software for Windows users, it is also possible to edit recorded AVCHD file using iMovie® for Macintosh users.

The camera will also capture videos in the MP4 format (up to 1440 x1080 30p 12Mbps) for online sharing.

Managing Difficult Lighting

The HX5V and TX7 cameras offer in-camera multi-shot High Dynamic Range (HDR), which combines highlight and shadow detail of two separate captures into one remarkably natural looking image—even without a tripod.

HDR offers a solution for strong backlight situations which typically result in either dark shadows in the foreground or a washed out background. Sony’s “Exmor R” sensor and BIONZ™ processor help to correct these issues.

Impressive Panoramas

The HX5V and TX7 cameras have an Intelligent Sweep Panorama™ feature that captures wide landscapes or tall buildings in one easy “press and sweep” motion. Due to their “Exmor R” CMOS sensor technology, they can take up to 270 and 258-degree panorama shots, respectively, horizontally or vertically with an image size of 7,152 x 1,080 (horizontal wide panorama mode). In addition, these cameras’ Intelligent Sweep Panorama feature, which is comprised of up to 100 separate captures, detects faces and subject motion and intelligently adjusts the width of each picture while stitching them together, resulting in natural looking panoramic photos.

Relive the Experience

Ideal for travelers who take hundreds of photos, the in-camera GPS + Compass feature on the HX5V camera makes it easy to store and share the location and direction of where photos were taken.

With social networking sites becoming more popular, people want to share more details of their experiences. The GPS + Compass feature provides a fun new way to share where they were -- beyond the location. Using the free online satellite imagery application, Google Earth™ mapping service, users can view the images from a bird’s eye view or from the direction in which the photo was taken. The GPS function automatically adjusts the camera’s internal clock by selecting the travelling area, without the hassle of setting the time manually.

A Wireless Way of Sharing, Storing and Viewing

TransferJet technology, which was developed by Sony and is supported by a consortium of other companies, allows you to transfer files between two TransferJet-enabled devices just by bringing the TransferJet marks on each product within one inch of each other without the hassle of hunting for cables or the complication of pairing. To transfer photos, TransferJet-enabled still cameras must each utilize the TransferJet Memory Stick media (sold separately).

TransferJet technology is perfect for sharing on the go. You can select up to 10 pictures and transfer them from camera to camera. For storing images, you can place the HX5V or TX7 cameras on the lower left-hand corner of the VAIO F Series notebook and import photos. For sharing at home on devices which do not have the technology, you can connect the TransferJet Station to devices with a type-A USB port, including your TV, digital photo frame or PlayStation®3.

Designed for Technology Enthusiasts

With the most innovative digital imaging technologies, the HX5V camera is ideal for everyone from travelers to party-goers.  The multi-occasion camera features a 10 megapixel “Exmor R” sensor, a 3-inch LCD screen (measured diagonally) and a 10x optical zoom with wide-angle 25mm-250mm equivalent high-quality G lens allowing easy group shots and close ups when on the move.

In addition to its AVCHD video capability, the HX5V camera has Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization with Active Mode, which lets you capture moving subjects such as kids walking or running. It allows a moveable lens element to shift with greater range of motion—10 times the range of the Optical Steady Shot™ feature at wide end in standard mode—during camera shake. The feature reduces camera shake so users can shoot smoother movie footage on the move. The cameras also have an HDMI™ output adapter for easily connecting to an HDTV for viewing pictures and movies (HDMI cable required).

Powerful and Stylish

For those seeking a sleek, compact camera, the 10MP TX7 model is just under an inch thin and is slim enough to slip into a pocket or purse.  The 3.5-inch (measured diagonally) high resolution (921K) touch LCD screen offers easy image scroll by simply swiping your finger across the display. The camera’s high-performance Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® 4x optical wide angle 25mm-100mm equivalent zoom lens brings distant subjects closer and Close Focus snaps close-ups in just under a half an inch from the subject.

The DSC-TX7 camera is also compatible with the Party-shot™ (model IPT-DS1) automatic photographer, which pans, tilts, zooms and adjusts composition to capture spontaneous images. Additionally, an embedded touch sensor located on the front edge illuminates when the TX7 camera is attached.  By touching the sensor, the camera goes into the "On-demand shot" mode, which allows users to select the shutter timing without losing the advantage of Party-shot's built-in intelligence.

To give customers greater choice and enhance the overall customer experience, the TX7 and HX5V cameras feature a memory card slot compatible with both Memory Stick® (PRO Duo™) and SD/SDHC formats. Sony is also expanding its industry leading line of consumer media with the addition of SD/SDHC memory cards.

Additional features found on HX5V and TX7 include iAuto, which detects eight and nine scenes, respectively, and optimizes camera settings and Easy Mode, which simplifies the camera menu. Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization reduces blur without impacting image quality, Face Detection and Smile Shutter™ technology, which captures faces and smiles naturally.

A New Way to Share Photos and Videos Online

These models include Picture Motion Browser (“PMB”) software for viewing, editing, organizing and uploading images to many major video and photo sharing Web sites.

This spring, Sony will launch a new service and a new integration with Facebook® allowing users to easily and quickly share their photos and videos privately with friends and family. The service and the integration will be available as a downloadable update to the “PMB” and “PMB portable” software applications that are embedded with bloggie™ and Cyber-shot cameras and bundled with Handycam® camcorders, bloggie cameras, Cyber-Shot cameras and α cameras. The Facebook integration complements the existing sharing capability with such sites as YouTube™ and Picasa™ Web Albums.

Casio Announces Four EXILIM Cameras

digital photographer

Casio_EX-FH100 At CES, Casio has announced four new EXILIM compact cameras---the HIGH SPEED EXILIM EX-FH100, EXILIM EX-H15, EX-Z2000 and EX-Z550.

From Casio: Casio America, Inc., and its parent company, Casio Computer Co., Ltd., today unveiled four new models in its award-winning EXILIM product line. Advancing the company’s performance-driven digital camera offerings, each new model builds on Casio’s tradition of delivering technological innovation and creativity to users. The first, the HIGH SPEED EXILIM® EX-FH100, featuring Casio’s heralded high-speed burst shooting, ensures users never miss a crucial shot again and packs a high-power zoom lens into a compact body. The next three, the EXILIM EX-H15, EX-Z2000 and EX-Z550 all feature Casio’s unique Dynamic PhotoTM function that lets users edit and combine different moving images right on the camera.

The leading models of this lineup, the EX-FH100 and EX-H15 are 10X optical zoom cameras, providing users with the ability to capture images from close or far distances. While the EX-FH100 makes the most of Casio’s unsurpassed high-speed burst shooting, the other three feature high-speed image-processing technology — not only to improve image quality, which has always been a key element of camera performance, but also to offer users entirely new ways of enjoying photography.

Thanks to the high-speed image-processing capability of the cameras, moving subjects can be dynamically “cut out” and pasted into a different still shot that forms the background. Before this technology was introduced by Casio in 2009, this Hollywood-like green-screen effect was only possible with professional equipment or software, but this technology is available in EXILIM digital cameras as an in-camera process. Casio’s Dynamic Photo feature was further enhanced through the ability to add animation art stored on the memory card to still photos captured by the camera. These animated images can be emailed, posted on social networks and even printed out at home!

“Casio is proud to introduce four new additions to the EXILIM line of digital cameras powered by Casio’s high-speed technologies,” said Toshi Iguchi, senior general manager of Casio’s Digital Imaging Division. “Casio continues to create digital cameras that enhance the photo taking and sharing experience while also providing consumers with convenience, accessibility and quality packed into a slim, sleek body.”

HIGH SPEED EXILIM EX-FH100 This 10.1 effective megapixel high-speed digital camera boasts a wide-angle 24 mm 10X optical zoom lens in a compact body that makes it easy to carry anywhere. It also gives users a maximum burst rate of 40 shots per second for still images (maximum image size of 9.0 megapixels and maximum shooting capacity of 30 shots) that can now be used to photograph distant subjects thanks to the high-power zoom. It also enables up to 1,000 fps high-speed movie recording that captures motion that is ordinarily too fast for the human eye to see.

The EX-FH100 allows users ranging from advanced amateur photographers to beginners to enjoy high-speed burst shooting. It is equipped with a mode dial that enables manual exposure burst shooting and also has a mode that makes high-speed burst shooting easy, a feature that sets the burst shooting speed to the optimal rate just by selecting the type of scene. With this model, Casio also achieves low-noise, high-quality photography even in dim indoor lighting by using a highly sensitive CMOS sensor.

EXILIM EX-H15 / EX-Z2000 / EX-Z550 These three models are all 14.1 effective megapixel high-performance digital cameras driven by Casio’s newly developed EXILIM Engine 5.0. Great advancements have been achieved in the Dynamic Photo function, which enables users to cut out images of a moving subject and paste them on a different still image that acts as a background. With these powerful new cameras, moving images can be combined not only on a still image but also on other moving images. This new capability increases the power of expression of images even more than before. Going further, these models not only increase the “fun of creating images,” but also increase the “fun of sharing images” by, for instance, making it easy to upload composite moving images to YouTube™ using the included software or post them to a blog.

The three cameras also come with Premium Auto, which is a state-of-the-art, fully automatic function that enables users to take beautiful photos just by pushing the shutter button. Premium Auto automatically adjusts to achieve optimal image quality by discerning the point of focus and the type of scene, whether a night scene, a backlit scene, or a sunset. It processes the image according to the details in the frame, for instance, by making different corrections for human subjects and background. In addition, the leading model, EX-H15, features 10X optical zoom.

HIGH SPEED EXILIM EX-FH100 A Highly Sensitive, High-Speed Digital Camera with a Powerful Zoom in a Compact Body Wide-angle 24 mm 10X optical zoom lens in a compact body The EX-FH100 features a high-power zoom lens in a compact body measuring just 105.0 mm wide x 63.2 mm tall x 29.9 mm thick.* The lens delivers all the freedom of zoom photography — from a wide-angle 24 mm to a 10X optical zoom that brings distant subjects right up close.

* In accordance with Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) standards. Ultra-high speed burst shooting captures crucial moments at a speed of 40 shots per second This model can take up to 30 shots of 9.0 megapixel high-resolution images with highspeed burst shooting at a maximum speed of 40 shots per second. What is more, if the camera is set to Prerecord Continuous Shutter, users will not miss those critical moments even if they press the shutter a little late, since the camera starts shooting when the shutter button is only depressed halfway.

High-speed movie recording at up to 1,000 fps The EXILIM EX-FH100 can record high-speed movies of motion that is ordinarily too fast for the human eye to see. Users can select a recording speed of 1,000 fps, 420 fps, 240 fps, or 120 fps. This model also has a mode that lets users to switch to high-speed recording at 240 fps or 120 fps by pressing a single button during normal movie recording (30 fps). High-speed recording allows users to enjoy dramatic, ultra slow-motion playback.* * For example, one second of actual movie recorded at a speed of 420 fps can be played back over 14 seconds at 30 fps.

Highly sensitive CMOS sensor Casio continues the quest for ever-higher picture quality, the foundation of every camera’s performance. This model incorporates a back-illuminated CMOS sensor that boasts nearly twice the usual sensitivity. This lets users take beautiful photos outside as well as highquality, low-noise photos indoors or in other dim lighting. And of course, the model also comes with CMOS-shift image stabilization.

BEST SHOT® modes facilitate high-speed burst shooting and high-speed movie recording High-speed Night Scene and Portrait

With the EX-FH100, users can take beautiful photos — even of human subjects at night — without worrying about photo blur. The camera can do this by internally combining images taken with a single press of the shutter button using highly sensitive high-speed burst shooting with the flash into a single, crystal-clear image.

High-speed Lighting The EX-FH100 takes three images using high-speed burst shooting, adjusting the exposure for normal (standard), bright, and dim subjects, respectively, with a single press of the shutter button. These images are then combined into a single image inside the camera, enabling reproduction of full brightness throughout the photo and helping to avoid bad photos with washed out or overly dark areas when the scene is strongly backlit.

High-Speed Burst Shooting BEST SHOT / High-Speed Movie BEST SHOT The EX-FH100 also has “High-Speed Burst Shooting BEST SHOT” and “High-Speed Movie BEST SHOT” modes that optimize the burst shooting or high-speed movie settings simply by selecting the type of scene to be photographed — such as a child, pet, or sports scene — at the critical moment or in slow motion.

High-resolution HD Movie function The EX-FH100 also features an HD Movie function. Just press the dedicated Movie button to take beautiful movies at 1280x720 pixels. The camera is equipped with an HDMI™ terminal and stereo microphone, which enable users to enjoy a beautiful picture and realistic sound by connecting the camera to a large display TV.

EXILIM EX-H15, EX-Z2000, and EX-Z550 Digital Cameras Equipped with a More Advanced Dynamic Photo Function for Combining Moving Images, Plus State-of-the-Art, Fully Automatic Features

Newly developed EXILIM Engine 5.0 Casio has made even further advances from its EXILIM Engine 4.0, which contained both an ordinary CPU and a high-speed dedicated image processing CPU. The new Engine 5.0 increases image processing speed by 30% and produces beautiful images through advanced color reproduction and rich tonal gradation and by removing noise from photos in high sensitivity mode.

Dynamic Photo: Make composite images of different moving images Casio has achieved great advancements in Dynamic Photo, a function that creates “moving photos” by cutting moving subjects from the background in images taken with continuous shooting and combining those images on a different still image. In addition to composites made with a still image background, cut-out moving images can now be pasted on other moving images. This new capability raises the power of expression of images. Thus, while increasing the “fun of creating images,” these models will also increase the “fun of sharing images” by making it easy to upload images to YouTube™ using the included software or post them to a blog.

Premium Auto: Take beautiful photos just by pressing the shutter button This function enables the camera to automatically analyze the scene being photographed — including distinguishing night scenes, back lighting, a blue sky, green trees, or a sunset — as well as sensing whether there is a face in the frame, the movement and position of the subject, and whether a tripod is being used. It simultaneously optimizes settings for exposure, ISO sensitivity, point of focus, photo blur correction, tonal range and color balance, and level of noise reduction. Premium Auto is a state-of-the-art, fully automatic function that makes it easy for users to take superior quality photos just by pushing the shutter button, by analyzing the image at the level of individual pixels and performing different corrections for human subjects and the background.

Art Shot Function: Shoot photographs that look like paintings The Art Shot Function makes use of the image processing technology in the EXILIM Engine 5.0 to create photos of scenery or human subjects that have the feel of a painting. The view in the LCD screen of the subject in front of the user can be switched between an oil painting, a crayon drawing, or a watercolor painting, allowing the user to select the preferred art style in which to photograph the scene.

A camera for everyone EX-H15 This 14.1 effective megapixel model packs a wide-angle 24 mm 10X optical zoom lens and a 3.0-inch Super Clear LCD screen with a high resolution of approximately 460,000 pixels into a compact body. The camera is also loaded with advanced standard features including CCD-shift image stabilization, long 1,000-shot* battery life on a single full charge, and the high-resolution HD Movie function. * In accordance with Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) standards.

EX-Z2000 This 14.1 effective megapixel model comes with a wide-angle 26 mm 5X optical zoom and a 3.0-inch Super Clear LCD screen with a high resolution of approximately 460,000 pixels in a compact, thin body. The camera comes with CCD-shift image stabilization and HD Movie function, as well as a long-life battery, making it possible to take 580 shots* on a single full charge. With this model, Casio has also realized a fresh new digital camera design, creating an innovative form finished in natural curves. * In accordance with Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) standards.

EX-Z550 This camera features a wide-angle 26 mm 4X optical zoom lens and a clear 2.7-inch LCD screen. A 14.1 effective megapixel model, it is equipped with CCD-shift image stabilization and HD Movie function.

Olympus Announces Stylus Tough-3000 & Three Other Stylus Cameras

digital photographer

Olympus_stylus_tough-3000_front_blue At CES, Olympus has announced arugged new update to the Stylus Tough series---the Tough-3000---and a new lineup of 14MP Stylus cameras offering HD video and wide-angle zoom lenses.

From Olympus: Olympus unveils the STYLUS TOUGH-3000, a shockproof, waterproof and freezeproof compact camera designed to capture all of life’s adventures from the extreme to the everyday. As the first Stylus Tough camera with High-Definition (HD) video, features like Magic Filter that expand your creativity and AF tracking to keep subjects in focus, the STYLUS TOUGH-3000 is as smart as it is durable. It’s also the first of several Stylus Tough cameras to be launched in 2010.

The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 also offers a new graphical user interface (GUI) for intuitive operation and new OLYMPUS [ib] software for rapid downloading and enhanced photo organization with Geotagging and Face Recognition functionality.

“The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 is the latest in the Stylus Tough series, a family of compact cameras designed for the places where families really go, like the pool, the slopes and the great outdoors,” said Nadine Clark, product manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc. “With HD video and 12 megapixels of resolution, you’ll relive life’s adventures.”

HD Videos and HDMI Control for a Home Theater Experience The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 shoots gorgeous 720p HD videos using a dedicated one-touch button, so you’ll always capture the scene. Playback is also a breeze. Now, you’ll be the hit of the party or any family function when you proudly display your brilliant images and videos on high-definition televisions. Simply connect the camera to an HDTV with an HDMI™ cable, which can be purchased separately at any consumer electronics store. With HDMI Control, you can use your HDTV’s remote to control playback functions and navigate the camera’s menus from the comfort of your favorite couch.

AF Tracking for Friends and Man’s Best Friend AF Tracking technology locks your fast-moving subject in focus, and continuously adjusts focus and brightness. This enables you to keep in focus fast-moving and unpredictable subjects like snowboarders on your favorite mountain, tropical fish while snorkeling or children at play anywhere in the great outdoors to capture the perfect shot. There’s even a specially designed AF Tracking “Pet Mode” for animal lovers.

Express Your Inner Artist with Magic Filter

In-camera Art Filters debuted on Olympus E-System DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras last year. Similar technology, called Magic Filter, has been developed for the new STYLUS TOUGH-3000. The Magic Filter enables the user to enhance and customize images as they’re being captured. This translates into more fun and flexibility as customization is no longer limited to using expensive and time-consuming computer software.

The new Magic Filter includes:

* Pop Art – Enhance and saturate colors to create vivid, high-impact pictures that express the joyful, lighthearted feeling of the Pop Art style of the 1960s; * Pin Hole – Reduce the peripheral brightness of an image as though it were shot through a pin hole, connecting the viewer intimately with the subject at the center; * Fish-Eye – Emulate the wide-angle of a fish-eye lens by taking extremely wide, hemispherical images and magnifying the center of the frame; and

* Drawing – Turn your image into a sketch outline for children to color.

Nothing Can Shock This Tough Camera Afraid the mountain wind might sweep a camera out of your hands and dash it on the rocks below? Never fear, the STYLUS TOUGH-3000, available in fun and sporty red, pink, blue and green, can withstand a five-foot drop thanks to the Stylus Tough series’ shock-absorbing technology, which minimizes the impact on the lens and circuitry.

Point-Dunk-and-Shoot Cameras Stylus Tough series cameras perform as well underwater as they do on land because their lightweight, yet durable exteriors are matched with interior rubber gaskets and O-rings to seal out the elements. The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 can be submerged up to 10 feet underwater. The inclusion of four preset underwater scene modes makes this camera perfect for taking photos while swimming, snorkeling or simply having worry-free fun in the pool. It can also capture HD movies underwater. The camera features a water-repellent lens coating to prevent water droplets from forming on the lens and enabling you to get crystal-clear shots no matter how wet the shooting environment.

Freezeproof for Arctic Adventures Whether you’re in the arctic tundra or building a snowman in your backyard, the STYLUS TOUGH-3000 camera can still perform when the temperature dips well below freezing (14 degrees Fahrenheit; -10 degrees Celsius). Stylus Tough cameras continue to enable you to capture great images in freezing situations where most traditional cameras would fail.

Wide-Angle Optical Zoom Captures It All The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 features a 3.6x wide-angle optical zoom (28-102mm equivalent in 35mm photography, f3.5-5.0) so that even more of the subject makes it into each shot – perfect for underwater photography. The lens does not protrude from its body so it is further protected from harsh conditions.

Cut Out the Blur with Dual Image Stabilization Dual Image Stabilization combines two technologies – mechanical Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization and Digital Image Stabilization – to provide one powerful anti-blur solution for capturing great images whether the photographer or the subject is moving. Olympus’ mechanical Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization keeps images sharp by adjusting the internal image sensor to compensate for camera movement, even in low-light conditions when shutter speeds are slower. Additionally, Digital Image Stabilization freezes the action with high ISO sensitivity and fast shutter speeds that prevent blurry images often caused by a moving subject.

Hit Them with Your Best Shot: Tap Control The Stylus Tough cameras can be controlled with a simple tap on their top, back or sides, which is made possible thanks to their internal 3D accelerometer that detects the direction of the force on the camera’s body. In adverse climates, Tap Control ensures fast adjustment of settings even if you are wearing gloves that make pressing traditional buttons nearly impossible.

12 Megapixels for Superior Image Quality The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 camera offers a 12-megapixel image sensor enabling consumers to achieve consistently sharp and vivid images when producing large-format prints or cropping/enlarging a portion of an image.

Can’t Hide with Face Detection! Portrait and group shots make family reunions live beyond the short event, and with Face Detection you’ll capture even the shyest relatives. The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 detects up to 16 faces within the frame and automatically focuses and optimizes exposure to capture sharp, brilliant portraits and group shots. Thanks to the unrivaled durability of the Stylus Tough series, you’ll capture amazing photos even if your next family reunion is at a national park, a water park or a ski slope!

Intelligent Auto Thinks for You Skating at night? You won’t be the last one on the ice setting your camera. Intelligent Auto Mode automatically identifies what you are shooting (i.e., Portrait, Night + Portrait, Landscape, Macro and Sports) and adjusts the camera’s settings to capture the best quality results. First-time users can jump into this quick and hassle-free feature that does the thinking for them and produces incredible images.

Broaden Your Horizons with In-Camera Panorama The places you can take Stylus Tough cameras – the rocky terrain of the Grand Canyon, the arctic glaciers of Alaska or the volcanic sand beaches of Hawaii – are locations where you want to capture as much of the scene as you can. In-Camera Panorama mode makes it easy by capturing three images and stitching them together to create one amazing panoramic picture. Simply press the shutter button and slowly pan across a panoramic scene. The second and third images will be captured automatically and stitched together with the first image – resulting in one seamless panorama-size picture. To create the ultimate panoramic picture, consumers can use the OLYMPUS [ib] Software to stitch up to 10 images together.

TruePic™ III Image Processor Olympus developed its exclusive TruePic III image processor for the demanding performance of digital SLR (single lens reflex) cameras. Olympus’ enhanced TruePic III Image Processor produces crystal-clear photos using all the pixel information for each image to deliver superior picture quality with more accurate colors, true-to-life flesh tones and faster processing speeds. TruePic III also captures crisp, clear images at high ISO settings, which are traditionally associated with increasing image noise or producing grainy photos.

OLYMPUS [ib] Software and In-Camera Manual All Spring 2010 digital compact cameras, including the Stylus Tough series, will offer the new OLYMPUS [ib] software. The new software includes photography workflow, browsing, editing and unique photo organizing functions. You can organize your photos by person with automatic face recognition technology, by location with a Geotagging function or by event. You can easily view photos on an HDTV or on the camera’s LCD with the Photo Surfing or Slideshow functions. The name [ib] stands for image bridging, image browsing and brighten images. The new software will be available for Windows operating systems only.

The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 will come equipped with the instruction manual saved on the camera’s new internal memory. This translates into easily referencing instructions while shooting on the go. The internal memory also enables in-camera image playback in an organized fashion. Eliminating a paper or CD-Rom instruction manual is part of Olympus’ ongoing environmental commitment to conserve natural resources and reduce its carbon footprint.

SD Compatibility Olympus’ new Spring 2010 digital compact cameras offer SD capability for up to 32 gigabytes of capacity.

Availability The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 will be available in February 2010. It includes: wrist strap, camera WIN/Mac USB cable, audio/video cable, Li-Ion rechargeable battery, warranty card and manual and OLYMPUS [ib] Software on the camera.

14 Megapixels for Superior Image Quality All three Stylus cameras offer a 14-megapixel image sensor enabling consumers to achieve consistently sharp and vivid images when producing large-format prints or cropping/enlarging a portion of an image.

AF Tracking for Friends and Man’s Best Friend AF Tracking technology locks your fast-moving subject in focus, and continuously adjusts focus and brightness. This enables you to keep fast-moving and unpredictable subjects like small children and pets in focus for the perfect shot. There’s even a specially designed AF Tracking “Pet Mode” for animal lovers.

Express Your Inner Artist with Magic Filter In-camera Art Features debuted on Olympus E-System DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras last year. A similar feature, entitled Magic Filter, has been developed for the new Stylus cameras. Magic Filter enables the user to enhance and customize images as they’re being captured. This translates into more fun and flexibility as customization is no longer limited to using expensive and time-consuming computer software. The new Magic Filter includes:

* Pop Art – Enhance and saturate colors to create vivid, high-impact pictures that express the joyful, lighthearted feeling of the Pop Art style of the 1960s; * Pin Hole – Reduce the peripheral brightness of an image as though it were shot through a pin hole, connecting the viewer intimately with the subject at the center; * Fish-Eye – Emulate the wide-angle of a fish-eye lens by taking extremely wide, hemispherical images and magnifying the center of the frame; and * Drawing – Turn your image into a sketch outline for children to color.

Blur-Free Photos Two Ways Dual Image Stabilization combines two technologies – mechanical Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization and Digital Image Stabilization – to provide one powerful anti-blur solution for capturing great images whether the photographer or the subject is moving. Olympus’ mechanical Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization keeps images sharp by adjusting the image sensor to compensate for camera movement, which often occurs in low-light conditions when shutter speeds are slower. Digital Image Stabilization freezes the action with high ISO sensitivity and fast shutter speeds that prevent blurry images often caused by a moving subject. By combining the two technologies, users of the new Stylus cameras are able to take crystal-clear images in any shooting situation.

Never Miss a Detail with Shadow Adjustment Technology Shooting outdoors in bright daylight can be tricky because of the extreme contrast between dark shadowed areas and bright sunlit areas. While the human eye is capable of detecting the nuances between dark and light and all the details in between, image sensors traditionally have not been quite as sensitive. These Stylus cameras address this challenge head-on with Shadow Adjustment Technology, which compensates for extreme contrast where the shadow areas are underexposed and lack visible detail. With this technology, users can preview and capture images with the same contrast as the naked eye.

In-Camera Panorama for the Ultimate Vista In-Camera Panorama mode captures three images and stitches them together to create one amazing panoramic picture. Simply press the shutter button and slowly pan across a panoramic scene. The second and third images will be captured automatically and stitched together with the first image – resulting in one seamless panorama. To create the ultimate panoramic picture, consumers can use the OLYMPUS [ib] Software to stitch up to 10 images together.

TruePic™ III Image Processor The Stylus cameras feature Olympus’ exclusive TruePic III image processor developed for the demanding performance of DSLR cameras.

OLYMPUS [ib] Software and In-Camera Manual All Spring 2010 digital compact cameras, including the Stylus series, will offer the new OLYMPUS [ib] software. The name [ib] stands for image bridging, image browsing and image brightening. The new software will be available for Windows operating systems only.

The new Stylus cameras will come equipped with the instruction manual saved on the cameras’ new internal memory.

Sleek Portable Bodies in a Range of Colors The sleek, lightweight metal bodies of Stylus cameras come in a variety of colors to suit everyone’s style. The STYLUS-7040 and STYLUS-5010 are available in titanium, pink and light blue, and the STYLUS-7030 comes in titanium, blue and purple.

digital photographer

SonyCyber-shot_DSC-W370_Black_Front_lg At CES, Sony has announced two new 14MP Cyber-shot cameras---the DSC-W370 and DSC-W350---with a CCD image sensor that provides the Sweep Panorama mode that we first saw at PMA last year in the Sony DMC-HX1 mid-range camera.

From Sony: Sony today announced two new 14 MP Cyber-shot® cameras (models DSC-W370 and DSC-W350) with a CCD image sensor that provides the innovative Sweep Panorama™ feature in a slim, compact body, making it easy to get the best shot.

Sony also announced three cameras (models DSC-W330, DSC-W310 and DSC-S2100) that offer a new thin, stylish design with advanced features such as longer zoom and wide-angle lenses, which provide versatility when shooting.

“We’re expanding Sweep Panorama, which has been such a well received feature, to our more affordable models,” said Kelly Davis, director of the Digital Imaging business at Sony Electronics. “Allowing users to capture the impact of a full panoramic scene with an easy to use, practical camera provides a great value to our customers.”

Innovative Sweep Panorama™ Technology

Sweep Panorama mode, first introduced in Sony’s breakthrough Cyber-shot DSC-HX1, DSC-TX1 and DSC-WX1 CMOS models, utilizes a CCD sensor to capture dramatic panoramic scenes. The W370 and W350 cameras shoot images continuously to capture wide landscapes or tall buildings in one easy “press and sweep” motion. They automatically stitch the images together to create one stunning panoramic photo.

The W370 and W350 Cyber-shot models can take up to 243 and 268-degree panorama shots, respectively, in one easy press-and-sweep motion with an image size of 7152 x 1080 (horizontal wide panorama mode).

Compact Design and Rich Technologies

The W370 and W350 cameras are designed for customers who seek Sweep Panorama technology at an affordable price. For those seeking a long zoom and a compact body, the 14 MP DSC-W370 camera has a 7x long zoom lens for capturing far-away subjects, a 3-inch LCD screen (measured diagonally) for scrolling through images, Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization, 720p movie recording capability and HDMI™ output for easily viewing movies on compatible televisions.

For those looking for the ultimate in portability, the W350 is the smallest camera in height and depth in the Sony 2010 line. It has a 2.7-inch LCD screen (measured diagonally) for viewing and sharing photos, a Carl Zeiss® wide angle 26mm equivalent lens for excellent close-up shots and a 4x optical telescopic zoom. With 720p movie recording capability and Sony’s Optical SteadyShot image stabilization on the W350 camera, it helps overcome camera shake when taking photos and videos on the move.

With HD video capability, these cameras record HD movies in 720p high definition MP4 format  for stunning large-screen home movie playback. You can record up to 29 minutes (or up to 2GB file size) in the 720p format.

If sharing with friends and family is your first priority, the 14MP W330 camera has a large 3-inch LCD screen (measured diagonally) that makes viewing images easy.  Additionally, it has a 4x Carl Zeiss lens with a wide angle 26mm equivalent lens.

Designed with size and affordability in mind, the 12MP CCD W310 model has a 2.7-inch LCD screen (measured diagonally) and 4x zoom with wide angle 28mm equivalent lens. For ultimate convenience and simple, straightforward image capture, the 12 MP S2100 model covers your basic camera needs with a 3x zoom, 3-inch LCD screen (measured diagonally), and it is powered by AA batteries.

Auto Intelligence and Easy to Operate

All five cameras include core Sony technologies: Intelligent Auto (iAuto) mode and Easy mode, which recognize scenes, lighting conditions and faces, and adjusts settings resulting in clearer images, faces with more natural skin tone and less blur. They also have Smile Shutter™ technology, which automatically captures a smile.

To give customers greater choice and enhance the overall customer experience, the cameras feature a memory card slot compatible with both Memory Stick® (PRO Duo™) and SD/SDHC formats. Sony is also expanding its industry leading line of consumer media with the addition of SD/SDHC memory cards.

Samsung Announces NX10

digital photographer

Samsung_NX10_front Samsung has announced the NX10, which they will be unveiling at CES this week in Las Vegas. DP first got a taste of this camera at PMA in March of 2009. According to the manufacturer, the "NX10 has the heart of a D-SLR embedded inside the compact frame of a digital camera, successfully integrating the APS-C size CMOS sensor with a mirrorless interchangeable lens, for a sleek, lightweight camera that users can easily take with them everywhere they go."

From Samsung: Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, today announced the Samsung NX10 – an innovative digital camera that provides users with optimum image quality in a sleek, compact body. Delivering creativity without compromise, users can now be as creative as they want on the move, without having to compromise perfect images. The NX10 will be on display during the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show, January 7-10, in the Samsung booth #11026 in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The NX10 incorporates a fast and decisive auto focus (AF), 14.6 MP APS-C size CMOS sensor and unique, large 3.0” AMOLED screen, allowing users to easily view their images, even in bright sunlight. Users can also record in HD movie to create the full story. Available in two colors, Noble Black and Titan Silver, the Samsung NX10 is small, light and ergonomically designed to ensure maximum portability for everyday use. The Samsung NX10 ensures users never miss a moment, with one of the fastest AF in its class on the market. The company’s latest innovation, the new DRIMe II Pro engine and advanced AF algorithm, also provide ultra fast AF speed with the higher precision of contrast AF. The Samsung NX10 has the heart of a DSLR embedded inside the compact frame of a digital camera, successfully integrating the APS-C size CMOS sensor with a mirrorless interchangeable lens, for a sleek, lightweight camera that users can easily take with them everywhere they go. Consumers are not just limited to taking shots but can also tell their own stories in video format with HD movie recording (H.264 codec). Samsung continues to extend the usage of AMOLED screens across many products, using a large 3.0” AMOLED screen in Samsung NX10. AMOLED provides easier viewing even in bright sunshine and at acute viewing angles, meaning users no longer need to shield their screen with their hand. The category leading screen also provides 10,000 times faster response rate than conventional LCDs, has a far lower power consumption and higher contrast ratio – 10,000:1 vs. 500:1. “The new Samsung NX10 marks the start of the next generation of cameras,” said Mr. SJ Park, CEO of Samsung Digital Imaging Company. “We know from our detailed research over several years that what consumers want from their cameras is evolving, which we’ve reflected in the development of the Samsung NX10. With specialist equipment open to everyone and no longer restricted solely to the professional, more and more people want to capture something creative and tell a story through their camera – but they also want something compact that they can carry around with them all day. The large sensor and the ultra fast auto focus give consumers the quality they demand as well as the compactness they want in one exceptional package.” Mr. Park continued: “Samsung has always been quick to implement cutting edge technology and no more so when it comes to quality of images. For the first time in the market, Samsung has successfully integrated an APS-C size sensor into a compact body by eliminating the mirror box, meaning that our users can now be as creative as they want to be on the move without having to compromise on image quality.” The Samsung NX10 also contains a range of intelligent features to put professional quality images within reach of the amateur photographer. The Samsung NX10 includes in-depth manual controls and also a Smart Auto function which automatically detects the surrounding environment of the shot and selects the best shooting mode. Its Smart Range feature also enables the user to vividly express both bright areas and dark areas in the same frame, and the Supersonic Dust Reduction system keeps those dust particles clear of the image sensor that can often impair an image. It even senses when the user brings the camera close to their face to look through the viewfinder, and puts the AMOLED screen on standby to conserve power.

The Best of 2009- CES

digital photographer

With CES 2010 approaching next week, let's take a look back at what made waves in the digital photo world at CES Las Vegas 2009, earlier this year: ces_globe

- The Sony Cyber-shot G3 impressed us when it was unveiled as the the world’s first Wi-Fi enabled camera (we later covered it in a full-length review in the Digital Photographer spring 2009 issue), and the Micro Four-Thirds Panasonic Lumix G1 wowed us as well, and it ended up being included in our "Editors' Picks" guide for the best gear in the Digital Photographer winter 2009 issue. We also got to check out the Sony Webbie HD camcorders, which are ideal for uploading straight to sites like YouTube.

- Other exciting products at CES '09 included: the Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 (which we went on to do a full-length review of in the Digital Photographer fall 2009 issue), the Samsung HMX-H106 flagship camcorder, the Canon Vixia HF S10 camcorder, and  the Pentax K2000D and K20D D-SLRs.

- And who can forget when yours truly was featured on "Good Morning America" for a split second during CES '09 in a segment aptly titled “Geek Chic: Gadgets for Girls”?

- One of the most exciting products that we saw at CES '09 wasn't a camera or even a lens, but a digital photo frame like no other by IPEVO, which we featured in the Digital Photographer spring 2009 "Exposure" column.
